‘자연’의 생산과 근대적 ‘관광’의 형성

국문 초록

지리학에서 자연-인간(문화)의 관계는 지속적인 탐구 주제인데, ‘관광’은 자연환경에 대한 문화적 개입이 구체적으로 드러나는 영역으로 다룰 수 있다. 이 글에서는 ‘어떻게 자연환경이 그대로 관광 상품으로 전환되는가?’에 관한 문제의식으로부터 일제시대 금강산 지역의 관광 형성을 고찰하였다. 최근 학계에서는 자연을 이해하는 사회문화적 개념틀이 제출되어 왔는데, 특히 ‘제2의 자연’ 개념은 천연의 자연처럼 보이는 인공으로서, 국립공원, 명승지 등 자연을 경험하는 관광의 이해에 유용하다. 조선시대 최고의 여행 로망지였던 금강산이 근대적 관광지로 변모하는 데에는 최초의 관광 철도인 금강산線의 개통이 결정적이었다. 고액의 교통요금과 시설이용은 당시의 관광을 사치스런 공간소비이자 최상의 문화기호로서 위치시켰다. 또한 수력발전을 통해 지형장애를 극복한 ‘전기기차’를 운행하였으며, 일본의 목욕문화와 보건국가관을 반영한 ‘온천관광’ 또한 대중화하였다. 결과적으로 금강산 일대는 산지(山地)뿐만 아니라 온천, 하천수의 낙차 등 다양한 자연 요소들이 동원되어 기술적으로도 첨단의 관광타운을 형성토록 하였다. 이것은 단순히 산업적 기획만이 아니라 식민통치를 정당화하고 홍보하려는 다중적 의도를 반영한 것이다.

영문 초록

Nature-society coupling has been dealt with as one of the fundamental research issues in geographical academia. The modernistic tourism has emerged during the colonial time in Korea and the touristic development applied to mountainous areas which known as their beautiful landscapes by generations, whereas touristic industries took place firstly around the coastal areas in European countries. Also, tourism is a proper research field that can elucidates the engagement between man-society with the natural environment. In this context, this research develops the idea of the ‘nature’ on the sociocultural angle and thus the terms of ‘the production of nature’ and ‘the 2nd nature’ were reviewed as key concepts. This article asks how the natural place such as a certain famous mountain itself turns to be the visual object for touristic consumption. With this question, this research illustrates the process of modernistic development in Mt. Kumgang area during the Japanese colonial period which had been existed the most beautiful landscape of natural landscapes in Korea.
