국문 초록

『中等萬國地誌』(1902, 1907)는 근대식 학제에 의거하여 학부편집국에서 발간한 3권의 세계지리 교과서이며, 일본 矢津昌永의 『中學萬國地誌』(1896)를 번역, 편찬한 것이다. 본 연구에서는 『중등만국지지』(重刊)의 내용체계와 주요 내용을 분석하고, 근대 지리 지식이 어떻게 수용되고 변용되었는지를 살펴보았다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 책의 서문과 발문에서는 ‘대한제국의 주권수호와 자주독립 인식의 확립’을 위해서 ‘학생들에게 세계지리에 대한 체계적인 지식을 잘 가르치는 일’이 시급하기 때문에 책을 번역, 발간한다는 배경을 밝히고있다. 둘째, 책의 주요내용은 근대지리학의 계통적 주제들과 120여개 국가와 지역을 씨줄과 날줄로 엮은 신지식이다. 마지막으로, 유럽과 서구 제국주의 중심의 내용체계와 대륙 중심의 지지 구성 방식은 번역 저본의 형식을 그대로 모방하고 수용하였지만, 내용 서술에서는 변용이 이루어졌다

영문 초록

『Jungdeongmangukjiji』(1902, 1907) is a world geography textbook published by Hakbu during the Korean enlightenment period. This book was translated from 『Junghakmangukjiji』(1896) that was written by Japanese geographer 矢津昌永. This study sought to discuss its contents organization and the acceptance and transformation of modern geographical knowledge. The major findings are as follows. First, based on the introduction and postscript in the book, this textbook was written to cultivate a the systematic knowledge of world geography. Its goal was to promote understanding of sovereignty protection for the Korean Empire and the establishment of independence. Second, The main content of the book, covers systematic subjects of modern geography and new knowledge with latitude and longitude information for more than 120 countries and linked territories. Finally, it accommodates and just imitates the format of the original books’ contents organization of Eurocentrism and Western imperialism, but the transformation of knowledge is made in the narrative
