운영의 자살심리와 <운영전>의 치유적 텍스트로서의 가능성에 대한 시론

국문 초록

본 논문은 고전소설 <운영전>의 치유적 기능에 대한 시론이다. 이는 소설의 현재성을 전제로 한 연구이며 특히 내면의 상처를 지닌 현대인에게 고전소설이 치유서로 기능할 수 있다는 가능성을 염두에 둔 것이다. <운영전>은 운영의 자살을 서사의 중심축으로 하며 기본 정조는 비극성이다. 운영이 자살을 한 동기는 한 가지로 귀결되지 않는다. 운영의 자살심리에는 생장 과정과 관련한 여러 가지 감정이 함께 작용한다. 운영은 13세로 부모를 떠나 궁중 생활을 시작했는데, 이 경험은 원초적 고독과 두려움을 형성하였다. 또한 성장하면서 대군자들을 압두할 학문적 성취를 이루었으나 세상에 쓰일 수 없는 신세를 자각하면서 삶의 목적을 상실하는 데서 오는 우울함에 사로잡힌다. 그러던 차에 김 진사를 만나게 되고 그와의 사랑을 삶의 돌파구로 삼으려 했으나 결국 성사되지 않는다. 김 진사와를 사랑하는 것이 죄는 아니지만 무모한 애정행각이 자기를 믿고 사랑해 준 안평대군과 궁중 사람들에 대한 도의를 저버리는 결과를 가져오자 운영은 더 이상 그들에게 면목이 없다는 말을 남기고 스스로 목숨을 끊는다. 이는 그동안 지속된 심리적 압박에 모든 사태를 자신의 탓으로 돌리는 자책이 더해져 극단적 절망으로 이어진 것이다. <운영전>이 담고 있는 비극 서사는 내면의 고독과 우울을 경험하거나 자살 충동을 느끼는 독자들에게 치유서로서 기능할 수 있다. <운영전>은 일대일 인과응보의 단순 구조를 벗어나 인간 내면에 존재하는 다양한 심리를 섬세하게 그리고 있으며, 그러한 감정이 발생하는 과정을 하나하나 확인하는 과정으로 이루어졌기 때문이다. <운영전>의 비극서사를 독서하는 과정에서 독자는 자신의 상처를 직시하고 상처의 원인을 발견하게 된다. 또 비극적 상황에 처한 운영을 위로함으로써 상대적으로 독자 자신에 대한 비극적 인식은 약화된다. 독서 과정은 대화의 과정과 유사하다. 자신의 심정을 누군가에게 이야기 하거나 반대로 유사한 처지에 있는 사람의 이야기를 듣는 것은 심리 치료의 한 방법이다. 독서자는 독서과정에서 자신과 동일시되는 인물과 대화함으로써 그러한 치유효과를 얻을 수 있다. 소설은 강요된 독서가 아닌 자발적 독서의 대상이다. 따라서 파도식 주기로 오고 가는 우울한 심리에 유연하게 반응할 수 있다. 또한 독자들이 말로 표현하기 어려운 '느낌'을 대신 표현해 줌으로써 억압된 감정을 분출하고 해소하는 기능을 한다. 이것은 교육적 기능에 치중한 규범서가 확보하지 못하는 소설의 역할이다.

영문 초록

This is a paper on a general opinion about a classic story and its possibility for healing text. This study is subject to its nowness and especially I have possibility in mind that mental agony of people today can be cured by a classic story. This story is built around Woonyeong's suicide and it ended in tragedy. There will not be one reason what caused her to commit suicide. Mixed emotions related to her growing up affects her suicide. Woonyeong left her parents when she was thirteen and started living in the court. As she was growing up she reached her scholastic achievements, but she realized that they are useless things for her. She finally has lost all sense of direction in her life and melancholy feelings crept ever her. She tried to look for a new way out, meanwhile, she met Kim-jinsa and fell in love but her love for him did not come about. Even though she was a court lady, Woonyeong thought it's not a sin to love someone other than a royal family. Ahnpyeong-deagun, King Sejong's third son had favored and trusted her. So she felt guilty about giving away the love he gave her. Eventually, she killed herself and she said sorry about her deed as she left. She had been under a lot of pressure and put the blame for all situation on herself, so these feelings drove her to despair. The tragedy in can function as a curer on depression or suicidal tendencies. It's because describes delicately various human psychology beyond the simple structure of comeuppance and it made up of a process confirming emotions that arise in every situation. Reading the tragic story, in the process, readers face up to their mental agonies and they can find out the cause of them. As they brought cheer to grieving Woonyeong, relatively they feel less tragic about their circumstances. Reading process is analogous to that of conversation. It can be a psychotherapy telling someone their troubles or listening to someone's troubles like them. In the process of their reading, they can have a chance to heal their pains through talking to a character who are in the same boat. Reading a novel can't be laid a person under necessity. So you can be flexible in a mood of melancholy that comes in and out. Readers can give vent to and relieve a lot of emotional baggage by describing their 'feelings' that is hard to put into words. This is a novels' trait that most normative papers with educational purpose don't have.
