차펙의 희곡 『어머니』에 나타난 주제와 모티프 연구

국문 초록

희곡 『어머니』에서 차펙은 전쟁의 무의미함과 부조리함을 극적으로 보여주고 다가오는 나치 독일의 공격에 대한 체코슬로바키아의 방어능력을 강화하려고 한 것이 분명하다. 작가는 주인공 쌍둥이에게서 보여주는 과격한 이념을 상징적으로 대립시켜 『삼부작』등에서 다루었던 상대주의 철학의 경향을 보여주고 있다. 그는 이 작품에서 아무도 절대적 진리를 주장할 수 없고 그래서 아무도 자기가 옳다고 생각하는 것을 다른 사람에게 강제적으로 강요할 권리가 없다는 것을 주장하고 싶었다. 동시에 그는 자기 조국이나 민족이 위협받을 경우 국민들에게 최후의 수단으로 싸우도록 부탁하고 싶었다. 물론 '조국'이나 '민족'이란 말은 가장 자주 남용되어왔던 개념이다. 그것은 무엇보다도 독재 이데올로기 창조자들이 가장 자주 사용하여 왔다. 서로 다른 광신주의가 정면으로 대결할 때 가장 피해를 보는 것은 여자들과 어린이들이라는 것은 논쟁의 여지가 없다. 이러한 논쟁은 갈등이 있는 곳이면 언제나 나타나는 현상이다. 이 희곡에는 남성과 여성의 사고방식의 갈등이 잘 형상화 되었다. 또 국가에 대한 의무, 사명감, 대의와 명예 때문에 죽은 남자들과 가정의 삶을 소중하게 생각하는 한 여자의 갈등이 잘 묘사되어 있다. 그 외에도 가족 간의 이념적으로 서로 다른 형제들의 갈등도 잘 형상화되었다. 희곡의 종결부분에서 라디오서 흘러나온 참혹한 뉴스를 들은 어머니의 변신은 그녀의 성격으로부터 오는 것이 아니라 조국이 위협에 처했을 때 모든 어머니들이 이행하지 않을 수 없는 당연한 것이다. 『어머니』가 초연되었을 때 사람들은 차펙의 절박한 호소를 십분 이해했다. 그들은 차펙이 무엇보다도 일생동안 평화와 비폭력을 높이 평가해왔음에도 불구하고 침략에 무력으로 저항할 것을 주장한 것은 정당하다고 생각했다.

영문 초록

It is apparent that Čapek tried to show dramatically nonsense and absurdness of war and to encourage the defence of Czechoslovakia against Nazi Germany's possible attack. The author shows the tendence of his philosophical relativism which he dealt in his trilogy through the symbolical opposition which is shown radical ideology between twins. He wanted that nobody can insist absolute truth and therefore nobody has right to force others to believe what he believes right. At the same time he wanted people to fight against enemy when their nation would be threatened. Of cause the terms "fatherland" or "nation" have been misused most repeatedly. First of all that terms have been used by creators of tyrannical ideology. It is no doubt that women and children are mostly victimized when the two different fanaticism clashes openly. This argument is a typical phenomena whenever there is conflict. There are well depicted the conflict of way of thinking between men and woman in this play. And the conflict between men who died because of the duty of nation, a sense of mission, a just and great cause and woman who thinks family life is important is well depicted. And also the conflict between family members is well embodied. Mother's change of mind who hears the horrible news from the radio at the end of paly is not from her character but it is natural phenomena of the all mothers who behave same way when their nation is in danger. When the play was premiered people understood what Čapek tried to tell them through the play. They thought it was right that in spite of Čapek's lifelong admiration of the peace and anti-violence he tried to assert to resist forcefully against the attack.
