국문 초록

본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 통일인식 변화와 통일교육 개선방안을 세대별·성별 차이를 중심으로 분석하였다. 특히 북한이탈주민을 통일교육의 수동적 대상이 아닌 잠재적교육 주체로 인식하고, 이들의 경험과 통찰을 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다. 연구방법으로는 서울 거주 북한이탈주민 26명을 대상으로 세대별·성별로 구분된 표적집단심층면접(FGI)을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 북한이탈주민의 통일인식은 세대와 성별에 따라 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다. ‘고난의 행군’ 시기를 성인으로 경험한 50대 이상 집단은 경제적 어려움과 체제 모순을 탈북의 주된 동기로 언급한 반면, 젊은 세대는 외부 정보 유입으로 인한 자유와 기회 추구가 주된 동기였다. 탈북 이후 통일인식의 변화 과정에서는 남한 사회 적응 경험이 결정적 영향을 미쳤으며, 특히 자본주의 체제에서의 생활 경험은 통일의 현실적 과제에 대한 인식을 심화시켰다. 현행 통일교육의 한계점으로는 교육 내용의 현실성 부족, 교육 방식의 일방향성, 교육 대상 특성에 대한 고려 부족이 지적되었다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 본 연구는 탈북민 강사 양성 프로그램의 체계화, 체험형 통일교육 프로그램의 확대, 통일교육 패러다임의 전환 등 실천적 개선방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 통일인식을 세대와 성별에 따라 체계적으로 분석함으로써 기존 연구의 일반화된 접근을 보완하고, 통일교육의 실천적 개선방안을 당사자의 관점에서 도출했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes changes in North Korean defectors’ perceptions of unification and explores ways to improve unification education, focusing on generational and gender differences. The research particularly recognizes North Korean defectors not as passive subjects of unification education but as potential educational agents, seeking ways to effectively utilize their experiences and insights. The study conducted Focus Group Interviews (FGI) with 26 North Korean defectors residing in Seoul, divided by generation and gender. The results showed distinct differences in unification perceptions according to generation and gender. Those over 50 who experienced the “Arduous March” period as adults cited economic difficulties and systemic contradictions as their main motives for defection, while younger generations were primarily motivated by the pursuit of freedom and opportunities influenced by external information. Post-defection experiences of adapting to South Korean society significantly influenced changes in unification perceptions, particularly how life experience in a capitalist system deepened understanding of practical challenges to unification. The study identified several limitations in current unification education, including lack of practical content, unidirectional teaching methods, and insufficient consideration of target audience characteristics. Based on these analyses, the study suggests practical improvements such as systematizing defector instructor training programs, expanding experiential unification education programs, and transforming the unification education paradigm. This research contributes to the field by systematically analyzing North Korean defectors’ unification perceptions by generation and gender, complementing existing generalized approaches, and deriving practical improvements to unification education from the perspective of the defectors themselves.
