국문 초록

이 연구는 대학내 전체 학과의 효율성을 분석함으로써 대학의 운영에 시사점을 제공하는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 이 연구에서는 대학에 소속한 55개 학과를 최종 연구대상으로 선정하였고, 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학 학과의 상대적 효율성은 어떠한가? 둘째, 각 학과별 투입변인과 산출변인의 상대적 중요도 및 기여도는 각각 어떠한가? 셋째, 학과의 어떠한 배경 특성이 효율성과 관련이 있는가? 넷째, 효율적 학과와 비효율적인 학과는 각각 어떠한 특징을 가지고 있는가? 이 연구를 통하여 나타난 결과들을 토대로 결론을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 효율적인 학과와 비효율적인 학과 모두 자신들과 유사한 우수학과에 대한 벤치마킹이나 자체평가를 통해 효율성 개선을 위해 지속적인 개선을 할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 투입변인 중 학과 학생수와 학생1인당 교육비 변인의 적정 규모에 대한 고려가 필요하다. 셋째, 대학의 특성화에 대한 효과성 뿐만 아니라 효율성에 대한 올바른 전략의 수립이 필요하다. 넷째, 학과의 교육여건 개선을 위한 총채적인 노력이 필요하다. 다섯째, 취업률을 제고할 수 있는 다각적인 방법이 검토되어야 한다. 여섯째, 비효율적 학과가 많이 분포한 단과대학은 효율적 학과가 다수 분포한 단과대학을 면밀히 벤치마킹하여야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficiency of the departments in a university by using various statistical methods. After reviewing literatures, four research questions were addressed in this study; ① What is the distribution between efficient and inefficient departments? ② What are the important input and output variables? ③ Are there any significant differences in efficiency scores when analyzed by characteristics according to department size and each college? ④ What are the characteristics of efficient and inefficient departments? The major findings of the research were as follows; First, About 53∼62% of all departments were required to improve the efficiency. Second, efficient departments showed more outputs with less inputs. Two input variables-the number of students and educational costs per student and one output variables-employment rate were the most important for efficiency. Third, smaller departments were more efficient than larger departments. The engineering college and the college of social sciences were more efficient than any other colleges. Forth, for efficient departments, educational costs per student, scholarship per student, and employment rate were importantly contributed variables. Taking these result into consideration, followings are suggested; First, all the departments should try to enhance efficiency through benchmarking and self-evaluation. Second, for efficient management, optimal number of students and optimal educational costs per student should be considered. Third, not also effectiveness but also efficiency should be considered for university policy and strategical management. Finally, improving educational environment and job employment should be the first issue for efficiency of department.
