영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to uncover the relationship between interruptions and gender. This study explores whether men interrupt more than women and also to determine whether men or women differ in the type of interruption they produce. In order to answer the questions, based on research, the study provides a definition of interruptions. The study then develops a classification system for interruptions that took into account the varying functions that they serve in conversation. The study employs seven men and four women for group discussions, and the data are analyzed in qualitative and quantitative methods. According to the data analysis, contrary to much research, women interrupt more than men. However, this result is judged not to be statistically significant. With regard to the different types of interruption, the study suggests that women provide more cooperative interruption than men, a finding which is determined to be statistically significant. This indicates that, in general, and in accordance with sociolinguistic research, women are more cooperative interrupters than men.
