The purpose of this paper is to provide the basic data for adequate research and reproduction of the hairstyles and official hats during the Koguryo period.
The hairstyles could be categorized into dropped hair, topknot and bald head.
The official hats were classified into seven such types as Ra Gwan (silk hat), Geon (head cover made of cloth), Chaek, Jul Poong (Triangle-shaped hat), Jowoo Gwan (Bird"s feather-decorated hat), Gak Gwan and Ip.
Ra Gwan was the hat worn by highly positioned people; king wore White Ra Gwan, high ranking officials wore Blue Ra Gwan, and the next level of people wore Red Ra Gwan. Geon is the cloth shaped like a towel covered one"s head and it has a strong practical character. Chaek, which indicates an official hat to cover hair, is a sort of hempen hood. There are two types of Chaeks, one for civil officials, and the other for military officers. Jul Poong was the decorative official hat worn by learned men or soldier class. Jul Poong was a highly practical and relatively convenient official hat and hair decoration in various movements. Jowoo Gwan was the official hat that was decorated with bird"s feathers on the Jul Poong, Pi Gwan and Ra Gwan. Mostly, a feather was put on the left and right sides of the above-mentioned hats each, or several bird feathers were put in the parietal region of the head in general. We found that bird"s feather was stuck on a helmet as well. Since high level of technology could have been required when making the angular shape of the Jowoo Gwan, it may be Koguryo"s distinct official hat, which has been more advanced than Jul Poong that just seamed from the front to the back once. Ip was the traditional Korean official hat which was used by the ordinary people in practical uses to avoid heat and rain.
