The purpose of this study is to design and apply a teaching and learning model for teaching argumentative writing to elementary school students based on understanding the notion of demonstration and becoming familiar with the demonstrative structure.
In order to rationally resolve conflicts and problems associated with the values of the complex modern society and build fundamental capabilities for critical reasoning and communication skills, the researcher focused on "demonstration". Demonstration is a key inference technique that is paramount for persuasion and criticizing as well as a fundamental element that can help an individual logically prove one"s statement and solve problems.
However, there is currently insufficient awareness about the concept and fundamentality of demonstration as well as research efforts in teaching demonstration in Korean language education.
In order to provide a method for teaching argumentative writing in an objective and persuasive manner by effectively structuring demonstration, this study attempts to design a teaching and learning model for argumentative writing based on demonstrative structures and apply it to specific learning contents.
In order to achieve the objectives, first, a demonstrative structure map model was established based on Toulmin"s demonstrative structure to improve the students" demonstrative capabilities. The model was then categorized into levels to teach the principles of the elements and structures of demonstration.
Second, an argumentative writing teaching and learning model was designed for applications in writing essays containing demonstrative structure and strategy based on learning principles. The model was applied in actual classrooms and the results were analyzed.
Results obtained by applying argumentative writing teaching techniques based on demonstrative structure and analyzing the students" writings are as follows.
First, as results of teaching the demonstrative structure according to each level, the students were able to learn the demonstrative structure, easily understand the concept of demonstration and write argumentatively using the demonstrative structure. The students sufficiently expressed the logical link between their statements and grounds, reinforcement about the grounds, counter opinion about the claims expected from those with opposing views and the restrictive technique for indicating the degree of confidence for their statements.
Second, learning about the demonstrative structure allows the students to create the frame of logical thinking, improve persuasiveness and write argumentative essays with solid logical structures, indicating that their writing capabilities have been enhanced.
Third, the students justified their statements in a sophisticated manner by applying the demonstrative structure, and the process of demonstration was systematically carried out according to the flow of their writing.
In conclusion, the students wrote by developing their opinions in a rational and logical manner by seeking demonstrative elements required for supporting their views through the teaching of argumentative writing based on the demonstrative structure. In other words, they were able to recognize the demonstrative structure, realize the logical frame of reasoning and communicate in a rational manner.
By learning the demonstrative structure and applying it to argumentative writing, the students were able to logically present the objective of their writing, critical views and value determination and objectively express their opinions. Moreover, rather than emphasizing their views in an unilateral manner, they were able to write more persuasive argumentative essays by accepting parts of those with opposing views and harmonizing them with their own ideas
