영문 초록

This paper aims to look into modern consciousness being embodied in Samdae through the Bakhtin's dialogical discourse. The plot of Samdae proceeds with 'curiosity' and 'sneer' of dialogue among characters,' In short, proceeding of plot is organized of characters' utterances. Their voices of utterances don't uniform structure and they have identity of difference and selection by prohibiting, suppressing each voice. Samdae is a narrative which represents it's characters' language and modern consciousness being revealed through the differences of their individual voices. The voices are not only one depict its characters' ambitions but also new age's. Samdae presents us the conventions which had something to do with human ethical aspects and social correlations. Samdae describes disappearance and generation of history through opposite and conflict of valuation between old age and new age ― in vertical ordinate, premodern/modern, tradition/reformation, and conservativeness/improvement, in horizontal ordinate, the bourgeoisie(the moneyed class)/the proletariat(the working class). In conclusion, Samdae is the novel as a polyphony. Samdae implies the possibility of opened interpretation in meeting new time and reader from undetermined point.
