영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of parent-child communication perceived by adolescents to their self-esteem. The subjects are the boy and girl students in their first year of two regular high schools and two business high schools selected. After a survey was conducted, the responses from 169 boys and 328 girls, were chosen for final analysis. For data analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson's correlation were used. The major finding are as follows: 1) Regarding how the students perceived parent-child communication, mothers shared more open communication with adolescents than fathers. The boy students had more open communication with fathers, who were of the same gender, than the girls did. The fathers who received middle-school or less education leaned toward problematic communication more than the other fathers whose educational level was highschool graduates or higher. The adolescents who perceived their family members ro get along amicably shared open communication with their parents. The fathers whose children attended business high school shared less open and more problematic communication with their children. 2) The level of self-esteem of adolescents is slightly above the average. Those who considered their families to be more peaceful felt better about themselves. 3) The adolescents who found themselves to have more open communication with their parents were in possession of higher self-esteem, and those who considered themselves to share more problematic communication with their parents were inferior in self-esteem. 4) The adolescents who had problematic communication with both parents were rated lowest in their self-esteem.
