팬데믹 상황에서 드러난 ‘시골 학교 고립의 역설’: 시골 초등학교의 학생 참여 양상과 촉진 요인을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 팬데믹 상황에서 시골 초등학교의 학생 참여 양상과 학생 참여 촉진 요인을 밝히는 연구이다. 이를 위해 강원 지역 초등학교 중 팬데믹 시기에도 학생 참여가 활발했던 시골 학교 두 곳의 사례를 선정하였고, 교사와 학생을 면담하여 질적 방법으로 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과, 학생들은 팬데믹을 ‘약간의 불편함’과 ‘관계로부터의 단절’로 인식하였으며, 원격 및 대면 수업 활동에 원활히 참여하며 학습 결손 문제는 특별히 겪지 않았다. 또한 다양한 학생자치활동에 참여하였고, 준비된 교육 환경에서 자발적으로 활동을 확장했다. 학생 참여가 촉진될 수 있었던 요인은 ‘시골이라는 환경적 특성’과 ‘개별 학생과 시골 학교에 애착심이 강한 교사’, ‘자율성과 유연성을 지닌 작은 학교의 허용적 분위기’로 나타났다. 결론적으로, 본 연구에서는 ‘시골 학교 고립의 역설’을 확인할 수 있었다. 시골 학교가 지닌 ‘고립’적 특성 때문에 오히려 안전이 담보된 공간에서 관계성을 강화할 수 있었고 학생들의 참여가 활발히 이뤄질 수 있었다. 대면 등교 확대로 학생 간, 학생 교사 간 연결이 유지되었기 때문이다. 그리고 교사 간 소통 및 의사결정의 유연성 확보로 팬데믹의 장애물을 극복해나갈 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study investigates student engagement patterns in rural elementary schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and elucidates the factors that facilitated sustained participation. Two rural schools in Gangwon Province, strategically selected due to their demonstrated active student engagement despite pandemic conditions, were chosen as case studies. Qualitative analyses were conducted through interviews with students and teachers. The results indicate that students primarily perceived the pandemic as a “minor inconvenience” and a “disconnection from relationships.” Students actively participated in both remote and in-person learning activities, resulting in no notable learning loss. Furthermore, students engaged in diverse self-governing activities and demonstrated expanded self-initiative within the well-prepared educational environment. Three key antecedents were identified as promoting student engagement: (1) unique environmental characteristics of rural settings, (2) strong teacher commitment to both individual students and the school, and (3) the permissive, flexible atmosphere inherent to small schools. In conclusion, this study identifies “the paradox of rural school isolation.” The inherent isolation of these schools provided a safe and contained space that simultaneously strengthened interpersonal relationships and sustained high levels of student participation. Flexible communication and decision-making among teachers were crucial for the schools to effectively overcome the pandemic-related challenges and ensure continuous relational maintenance.
