국문 초록

본 논문은 고려 중기 문학작품에 나타나는 원효의 형상에 투영된 문인들의 내면 의식과 현실 인식을 조명하였다. 무신의 집권으로 문인들의 자유가 제약되었던 이 시기에 당대 문예와 사상을 대표한다고 평가되는 문인인 임춘, 이인로, 이규보는 모두 저마다의 자의식과 현실 인식, 문학적 역량에 따라 독창적인 원효의 상을 부조하였다. 이들에게 원효 관련 서사와 인물 형상은 자신의 인생을 투영한 문학적 매개로서 의미가 있었다. 문인들은 제도권의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나든 원효와의 공명을 통해 자신의 심사를 풀어내고 작품성을 높일 수 있었으며. 원효는 이 세 문인의 호명과 형상화를 통해서 개성 있는 이미지를 획득할 수 있었다. 임춘의 경우 원효를 유마힐에 비유하여 비타협적 고독감을 형상화하였는데, 이는 무신집권기 핵심 문벌의 몰락이라는 시대적 배경 속에 소외되었던 자신의 정치적 고립감과 문학적 자존감을 담은 것이었다. 이인로의 원효는 저잣거리의 천한 이들 사이에서 거리낌 없이 춤추고 노래하며 자신의 사상을 펼치는 모습으로 그려졌다. 성속과 귀천의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나드는 원효의 모습은 세속에서의 관직 생활과 산림에서의 시문 창작, 정치적 불만과 문학적 재능 사이에서 갈등하던 이인로 자신의 현실적 고뇌가 투영된 결과로 해석된다. 이규보가 원효의 생을 한바탕 놀이로 일컬은 것은, 고정된 지위에 연연하지 않는 상대적인 태도와 소신에 따라 현실에 참여하여 재능을 발휘하겠다는 적극적 의지의 발현으로 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study illuminates the inner consciousness and perception of reality held by mid-Koryŏ literati, as projected onto the figure of Wonhyo within their literary works. During this era, when the freedom of the literati was constrained by the military regime, Im Chun, Yi In-ro, and Yi Kyu-bo—representative figures of contemporary literature and thought—each fashioned a unique image of Wonhyo, based on their respective self-consciousness, perception of reality, and literary competence. For these writers, the narratives and persona of Wonhyo served as a literary medium through which they projected their own lives. Through this resonance with Wonhyo, they were able to articulate their inner sentiments and elevate the aesthetic quality of their works. Ultimately, through the literary appropriation and artistic shaping by these three literati, Wonhyo acquired a distinct literary image. Im Chun likened Wonhyo to Vimalakīrti(維摩詰), fashioning an image of uncompromising solitude. This encapsulate his own political isolation intertwined with literary pride, stemming from his alienation as a scion of a fallen powerful clan during the military regime. Yi In-ro depicted Wonhyo as uninhibitedly dancing and singing among the lowly in the marketplace, spreading his philosophy without hesitation. This image of Wonhyo, freely traversing the boundaries between the sacred and the secular, the noble and the base, is interpreted as a projection of Yi In-ro’s own anguish rooted in his reality—torn between official service in the secular world and poetic creation in the Bamboo Grove, and between political discontent and his unrivaled literary talent. Yi Kyu-bo’s characterization of Wonhyo’s life as “a single grand play(一場戱)” can be understood as an expression of his active determination to engage with reality and fully exercise his talents according to his convictions, while maintaining a relativistic attitude unconstrained by fixed social status.
