국문 초록

Standards offer numerous opportunities and benefits not only to provide effective and efficient way for business goals internally, but also to increase company’s competitiveness externally. Standards and standardization have emerged as strategic management tools, and companies take strategic options on standards for achieving their business goals based on their contexts and attributes This study is to examine how strategic options on standards issues can be taken by companies for business goals based on Miles and Snow typology and identify the organizational contexts and attributes associated with these choices. Empirical analysis showed that Korean high-tech companies generally prefer proactive and efficiency-driven strategic options on standards, defenders and prospectors. The defenders has the strongest and most statistically significant impact on standard utilization and standard effects. Results also revealed that strategic options is closely linked to the internal institutional commitment to standardization, particularly when driven by leadership and strategic clarity. It can provide guidelines on standard strategies for business goals.

영문 초록

표준은 기업 내부적으로는 비즈니스 목표를 효율적이고 효과적으로 달성하는 수단을 제공하며, 외부적으로는 기업의 경쟁력을 높이는 전략적 도구로 활용되고 있다. 최근 표준과 표준화는 전략적 경영 수단으로 부상하고 있으며, 기업들은 각자의 조직적 맥락과 속성에 따라 표준에 대한 전략적 선택을 수행하고 있다. 본 연구는 Miles와 Snow(1978)의 전략 유형 이론을 바탕으로, 기업들이 비즈니스 목표 달성을 위해 표준과 관련된 전략적 옵션을 어떻게 취하는지를 분석하고, 이러한 선택과 관련된 조직적 맥락과 특성을 규명하고자 하였다. 한국의 첨단 기술 산업에 속한 기업들을 대상으로 한 실증분석 결과, 대부분의 기업은 방어자(defenders) 및 개척자(prospectors) 전략과 같이 능동적이고 효율 중심적인 표준 전략을 선호하는 경향을 보였다. 특히 defender 전략은 표준 활용도와 표준 효과 모두에 대해 가장 강력하고 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기업의 전략적 표준 선택은 리더십의 관심과 전략적 명확성이 뒷받침될 때, 조직 내부의 제도화된 표준화 활동과 밀접하게 연계된다는 사실도 확인되었다. 본 연구는 기업의 비즈니스 목표 달성을 위한 표준 전략 수립에 실질적인 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
