The Effect of Infection Control Education on Infection Awareness Levels in Physical Therapy Students

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of infection control education on the infection awareness levels of physical therapy students by assessing their knowledge and practices before and after the training. Methods: A total of 76 students from the Department of Physical Therapy at E University participated in this study. A modified questionnaire, originally designed for physical therapists, was used to measure general characteristics and infection awareness levels. Infection awareness was categorized into three domains: Personal hygiene and clothing management, Hand hygiene, and Environmental and equipment management. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-samples t-tests, and Cohen’s d was calculated to measure the effect size of the education program. Results: The results showed a statistically significant improvement in infection awareness levels across all domains (p<0.05). The effect sizes were 1.308 for Personal hygiene and clothing management, 1.280 for Hand hygiene, and 0.779 for Environmental and equipment management, with the greatest improvements observed in Personal hygiene and clothing management and Hand hygiene. Conclusion: Infection control education was found to be effective in enhancing the infection awareness levels of physical therapy students. These findings emphasize the need for structured infection prevention programs in the physical therapy curriculum and highlight the importance of developing specialized training programs to reinforce professional hygiene practices.
