국문 초록

Ethics in occupational therapy clinical settings has long been dominated by the principle-based model proposed by Beauchamp and Childress. Centered on four key principles—autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice—this model has provided a systematic foundation for ethical reasoning and has significantly influenced ethical codes and education across health professions. However, it has also been criticized for being overly abstract and individualistic, and for lacking sensitivity to relational dynamics and cultural background contexts. These limitations become particularly evident in occupational therapy, a profession deeply rooted in therapeutic relationships and the subtle realities of everyday life. This paper argues that Carol Gilligan’s ethics of care offers a meaningful alternative that can address these limitations. Ethics of care is grounded in the moral significance of human relationships and is noteworthy as an ethical framework that responds sensitively to background contexts. Using occupational therapy as a case example, this paper explains how care ethics—emphasizing empathy, interdependence, and moral responsiveness to others—can complement aspects of client-centered practice that principlism tends to overlook. The aim of this discussion is not to present care ethics as a replacement for justice-oriented or evidence-based approaches, but rather to highlight its potential to supplement and expand existing ethical frameworks. Through this, the paper emphasizes the need for ethical models that reflect the relational and socio-cultural realities of clinical practice, and seeks to contribute to a broader normative understanding of moral agency in the health professions.
