국문 초록

본 연구는 마샤 노먼의 희곡 『잘자요, 엄마』를 중심으로, 희곡에서 연극으로의 장르 전환 과정에서 크로노토프가 어떻게 형성되는지를 고찰하고, 나아가 연극치료에서 크로노토프 이론의 적용 가능성을 탐색하고자 하였다. 기존 연구들이 주로 여성주의적 관점에서 인물의 심리 해석에 집중해 온 반면, 본 연구는 다섯 가지 크로노토프 유형을 중심으로 시공간과 인물의 행동을 연계하여 분석하는 데 중점을 두었다. 연구 과정은 먼저 바흐친의 크로노토프의 개념과 수용 양상, 그리고 연극적 관점에서의 적용을 고찰함으로써 이론적 틀을 정립하였다. 이후 본격적인 분석은 세 단계로 나누어 진행되었다. 첫 번째, 희곡을 문학적 크로노토프 관점에서 분석한 결과, 이 작품은 ‘성의 크로노토프’, ‘지방 소도시의 크로노토프’, ‘문턱의 크로노토프’, ‘길의 크로노토프’, ‘응접실의 크로노토프’ 등 다섯 가지 주요 거시적 크로노토프로 구성되며, 제시와 델마의 인물에 따라 크로노토프의 흐름이 상이하게 전개됨을 확인하였다. 두 번째, 연극 장르로의 전환 과정에서는 배우의 신체적 수행을 통해 미시적 크로노토프가 형성되며, 관객의 인지적 참여를 통해 창조적 크로노토프가 형성되는 양상을 분석하였다. 특히 유닛(unit)과 비트(beat) 단위로 희곡을 분석하고, 배우가 몸으로 체화하는 ‘선행 작업’, 연출가가 배우의 몸을 매개로 한 크로노토프 ‘구현 과정’, 그리고 관객의 크로노토프 ‘수용과 재창조’라는 3단계 구조로 구분하여 연극적 크로노토프의 형성 과정을 규명하였다. 마지막으로, 연극치료적 관점에서는 ‘집의 크로노토프 → 문턱의 크로노토프 → 길의 크로노토프 → 집의 크로노토프’로 이어지는 크로노토프의 이동 구조가 치료적 여정과 밀접하게 상응함을 밝혔다. 이는 ‘극적 투사’를 통한 자기 인식으로서의 ‘집’, 행동을 촉발하는 전이 지점으로서의 ‘문턱’, 삶의 흐름을 따라 관계를 재조망하는 ‘길’, 그리고 통합과 회복의 ‘집’이라는 순환 구조가 참여자에게 치유적 경험을 가능하게 하는 구조임을 시사한다. 이와 같은 분석을 통해, 본 연구는 크로노토프 개념이 문학적 분석 도구를 넘어 연극 장르로 구현되는 과정에서도 효과적으로 적용할 수 있음을 입증하고, 아울러 연극치료의 실천적 맥락에서도 크로노토프 이론의 활용 가능성을 제시함으로써, 향후 관련 연구의 이론적 기반을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on Marsha Norman’s play 'night, Mother and investigates how chronotopes are formed during the genre transition from drama script to theatrical performance. Furthermore, it explores the applicability of chronotope theory in drama therapy. While previous research has mainly emphasized feminist interpretations of characters’ inner lives, this study centers on analyzing the relationship between spatiotemporal dimensions and character actions through five types of chronotopes. The theoretical framework is established by reviewing Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope, its reception, and its application from a theatrical perspective. The analysis is conducted in three stages. First, a literary analysis from the perspective of chronotope identifies five major macroscopic chronotopes—the bedroom, the small provincial town, the threshold, the road, and the parlor—showing distinct chronotopic flows based on the characters Jessie and Thelma. Second, during the genre transition to theater, microscopic chronotopes are formed through actors’ physical performances, and creative chronotopes emerge via audience cognitive engagement. The play is analyzed at the unit and beat levels, dividing the formation of theatrical chronotopes into three phases: actors’ preparatory embodiment, directors’ realization through actors’ bodies, and audience reception and recreation. Finally, from a drama therapy perspective, the cyclical movement of chronotopes—from home to threshold, then to road, and returning to home—closely corresponds with the therapeutic journey. This cycle suggests that ‘home’ functions as self-awareness through dramatic projection, ‘threshold’ as a transition point triggering action, ‘road’ as reexamination of relationships along life’s flow, and ‘home’ again as integration and recovery, facilitating healing experiences for participants. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that chronotope theory can be effectively applied not only as a literary analytic tool but also in theatrical realization, and further suggests its potential use in drama therapy practice. This contributes to expanding the theoretical foundation for future interdisciplinary research on chronotopes.
