“이게 학교야?”: 코로나 팬데믹 상황, 온라인학교 체험을 통해 본 학교의 의미

국문 초록

이 연구는 “이게 학교야?”라는 아들의 질문이자 부정에서 시작되었다. 이 질문에 답하기 위해 연구자는 현상학적 관점에서 2020년 1년 동안 내가 학부모로서 체험한 두 자녀의 온라인학교 체험과 나와 다른 사회경제적 배경과 자녀를 둔 7명의 학부모들의 체험에 대해 반성하고 해석하였다. 나를 포함한 학부모들은 자녀들의 대면등교뿐만 아니라 온라인학교 체험을 바로 옆에서 지켜보고 함께 참여하고 연루되는 과정에서 ‘학교’의 의미를 반성적으로 체험하고 있었다. 이 반성적 체험들의 본질적 의미 구조를 찾기 위하여 면담 자료와 관련 문헌들을 읽으며 자유 변경을 통한 본질 직관과 해석학적 순환을 시도하였다. 이 과정을 통해서 ‘학교’란 가정이라는 사적 영역을 벗어나 어린 세대들이 다양한 교과와 의례 등을 중심으로 가치추구를 연행(perform)하는 어른 세대의 ‘행위’를 상호신체적으로 체험하고 자신들도 참여하는 최초의 공적 영역이며, 그 속에서 또래들과 더불어 모방하고 서로를 알아나가는 체험의 축적 속에서 “내공”, 즉 ‘깊이’를 갖추고 자신을 탄생시켜나갈 수 있는 곳임을 밝혔다. 즉, 학교다운 ‘학교’에서 어린 세대는 미래 자신의 삶을 세계와 더불어 펼쳐나갈 ‘존재론적 자기주도성’을 키워나갈 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때, 학교교육은 ‘성년식(initiation)’이다. 특히 시장과 관료제적 합리성이 강력하게 발휘되고 있는 후기 근대사회에서 학교는 다양한 어른 세대와 또래들을 상호신체적으로 만나 본격적으로 진(眞), 선(善), 미(美), 한 마디로 ‘성(聖)’스러운 세계로 자신의 삶을 자유롭게 펼쳐 확장해 나갈 힘을 기를 수 있는 유일한 제도이다. 이렇게 볼 때 디지털 전환이 강조되는 시점에서 ‘학교’의 본질적 의미를 실현하는 일은 어린 세대의 교육적 성장을 위한 어른 세대의 책임이다. This study aims to reveal the meaning of school through online school experiences during the Corona pandemic. Starting with my son’s question, “Is this school?,” the researcher, who is not only parent but also a teacher, tries to understand the meaning of school that parents has realized by watching and participating in their children’s online schooling. The meaning revealed from the phenomenological perspective, whose aim is to search for the meaning along with questions generated from lived experiences through the process of dialectical interpretation, is as follows: More than anything else, school is a ‘public sphere where children can connect and associate with others in person through ‘acting,’ which is Arendt’s critical concept. In school, children can experience and imitate teachers’ acting with other children and can have diverse opportunities to know others and themselves by corporeal interactions, and eventually can fold their options of acting, which results in ‘depth’ of experiences, called ‘ontological self-directedness’ which can be unfolded to the world in the future. In this vein, schooling can be interpreted as ‘initiation’. Schooling is not only an institution but also a phenomenon manifesting itself by liberating children from a narrow well of late-modern household and empowering them to unfold a free and sacred life with their peer against the strong centripetal force of the market’s and bureaucratic rationality.
