국문 초록

본 논문은 미국과 한국의 유아교육 기관에서 실천되는 갈등사회화 관습을 비교문화적 관점에서 분석하여, 이에 투영된 두 사회의 문화특수적 사회관계의 특성을 살펴보는 것을 주된 목적으로 한다. 두 문화의 갈등사회화 관습은 교사의 갈등에 대한 태도, 역할, 개입 빈도, 갈등의 책임을 다루는 방식, 그리고 갈등을 둘러싼 행동의 의도와 감정이 형상화되는 방식에 있어 문화적 차이가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 미국의 갈등사회화 관습은 교사의 적극적 개입과 중재자로서의 역할, 가해자와 피해자의 구체화, 갈등에 있어서 감정의 중요성, 한국의 사회화 관습은 교사의 무개입, 갈등의 책임을 갈등 당사자 공동에게 부여하는 방식, 갈등에 있어서 의도의 중요성을 각각 특성으로 하는 것으로 나타났다. 논문은 이러한 문화적 차이를 두 문화에서 이상적으로 생각하는 사회적 관계, 사회성, 공동체의 특성과 연계하여 분석, 논의한다. This paper comparatively analyzes teachers’ involvement with peer conflict in preschool classrooms of the U.S. and Korea to illuminate culturally specific ways of conflict management in the two cultures. The analysis of conflict discourses shows that conflict management practices of two cultures differ in terms of teachers’ attitude toward conflict and their roles in conflict management and the ways responsibilities, intentionalities, and feelings involving conflicts are dealt with. The conflict socialization practices of the U.S. are characterized by teachers’ active intervention in children’s conflicts as mediators, the specification of the offender and the victim, and the importance of feelings in conflicts, whereas the Korean ones are featured by teachers’ non-intervention tendency, the attribution of responsibility to all parties involved in conflicts, and the significance of intentionality. The paper contends that children, through participation in conflict management practices, not only learn culturally specific ways of carrying out, managing, and resolving conflict, but are also socialized into societal values of social relationships, social and moral order, and socialities.
