자료의 존재론: 대패ₙ이 들려주는 자료 이야기

국문 초록

어떤 자료를, 어떻게 구성하는가의 문제는 곧 연구자가 무엇을, 왜 자료로 간주하고 있는가라는 연구자의 관점을 반영한다. 그런데 질적 연구 분야에서 자료란 무엇이며, 어떠한 특징을 갖는지, 그리고 연구에서 자료는 어떠한 역할을 하는 것인지에 대한 논의는 2000년대에 들어서야 주목의 대상이 되고 있다. 한편 경험주의와 합리주의라는 세계관은 자료를 수동적이며 생명이 없는 존재로 다루는 데 영향을 미쳐 왔다. 그러나 인간과 비인간으로 이루어진 모든 사회문화적 실천 가운데 비인간 혹은 물질의 행위성을 강조하는 ‘신물질주의(new materialism)’는 자료의 의미, 성격, 지위에 대한 근본적인 재개념화를 시도하고 있다. 이 글에서는 신물질주의와 같은 맥락에서 자료와 연구자가 어떻게 상호작용하며 어떻게 서로를 함께 만들어 가는지 목공의 세계를 사례로 보여주고자 한다. 대패n은 살아 있고, 행위하며, 정서적 힘을 갖는 자료를 가리키며, 이는 목공의 세계를 상징하는 ‘대패’와 접속되는 항들에 따라 그 성질과 차원수가 달라지는 다양체를 뜻하는 기호‘n’이 결합한 것이다. 연구자는 이러한 대패n을 통해 자료와 연구자의 존재론적 공모(共謀)에 대한 비판적 성찰의 계기를 갖고자 한다. The problem of what kind of data and how to put them together reflects the researcher's point of view as to what and why the researcher considers the data. However, discussions about what data, which features, and what role the data plays in research in the field of qualitative research have become a subject of attention only in the 2000s. Furthermore, empiricism and rationalism in the whole of humanities and social sciences have influenced the dichotomy of subject/object, mind/material in qualitative research and dealing with data as inert, passive, and lifeless. However, 'new Materialism,' which emphasizes the agency of the nonhuman or the material among all the socio-cultural practices of human and nonhuman, attempts to fundamentally reconceptualize the meaning, features, and status of data. In this article, I try to show how the data and researchers interact with each other and how they are working together by using the ‘Planen’ as an example of the woodworking world. Planen refers to the data that are alive, acting, and affective, combining the symbol n, which represents a manifold whose properties and dimensions vary according to terms connected to the plane that represents the world of woodworking. I hope to have a chance of critical reflection on data and researcher's ontological cooperation through this multiplicity, Planeₙ.
