북한이탈 대학생의 생애과정에서 나타난 긴장감에 대한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 북한이탈 대학생의 생애과정에서 나타난 긴장감의 본질을 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서는 밴 매넌이 제시한 4가지 실존체 분석 방식을 사용하고자 했으며, 북한에서 중국과 제3국을 거쳐 남한으로 이동하는 과정에 대한 심층적 탐구를 위해 밴 매넌이 제시한 시간성과 공간성을 3단계로 구분하였다. 북한이탈 대학생 9명을 연구 참여자로 선정하여, 이들이 경험했던 시·공간속에서의 기억과 욕망을 긴장감의 측면에서 탐구하였다. 특히 타자와 상호작용하는 과정에서 신체에 나타나는 긴장감을 추적하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 드러난 긴장감의 실체는 ‘감시와 처벌에 따른 긴장’, ‘고발과 송환에 따른 긴장’, ‘경쟁과 배제에 따른 긴장’으로 나타났다. 강도나 밀도 측면에서는 전체주의 사회에서 나타나는 감시와 처벌에 따른 긴장이 더 컸으나, 긴장의 지속성 측면에서는 유동적인 사회이지만 소수자를 배제하거나, 경쟁을 요구하는 사회에 적응하는 과정에서 지속적인 긴장이 나타났다. 한편, 본 연구의 본질적 주제는 ‘삶의 터전에서 내몰리기’, ‘사선에서 살아남기’, ‘경쟁에서 살아남기’로 나타났다. 연구 참여자들은 ‘살아남기’ 위해 노력하는 과정에서 긴장감이 나타났으며, 이러한 긴장감의 이면에는 탈북과정에서 생존하겠다는 욕망과 무사히 남한으로 가고자하는 욕망, 남한 사회에서 성공하겠다는 욕망이 자리 잡고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론적으로, 북한이탈 대학생의 신체를 통해 드러난 긴장감은 그들의 생애과정에서 형성한 생명위협에 대처하기 위한 필사적인 방어 전략이며, 생존을 위한 내적 투쟁의 결과이며, 현재 남한사회에서 성공하기 위한 원동력이었다. The purpose of this study is to understand the nature of tensions in the life cycle of North Korean college students in South Korea. This study used the four methods of existence analysis proposed by Van Manen to explore the experiences from North Korea, China through the 3rd country, to finally South Korea. From the experiences of nine North Korean college students, this study focused on the phenomenon of the ‘tension’ based on the memory and desires of the participants. Especially, the process of interaction with others, the tension appeared on their body was explored. The experience of moving from North Korea to China through a third country, time and spatiality were divided into three stages. The reality of the tension revealed through this study are 'tension due to surveillance and punishment,' 'tension due to accusation and repatriation,' and 'tension due to competition and exclusion.' In terms of strength and density, tension due to surveillance and punishment often visible in a totalitarian society was greater; however, in the aspect of continuity of tension, the tension was great during the process of adapting to a mobile society that excluded minorities or demanded competition. On the other hand, the essential themes of this study were ‘expulsion from home,’ ‘survival in a life-or-death crisis,’ and ‘survival in competition.’ The participants showed tension in the process of survival, and behind this tension are the desire to survive in the process of defecting, the desire to reach South Korea safely, and the desire to succeed in South Korean society. In conclusion, the tension expressed through the body of North Korean college students is a desperate defense strategy to cope with the life threat posed by their lives, the result of internal struggle for survival, and a driving force for success in the present South Korean society.
