이 논고는 스토아 특유의 유기체적 유물론을 해명하는 주요 개념인 ‘프네우마(pneuma)’를 중심으로, 초기 스토아학파와 시기적으로 근접한 기원전 5세기 말에서 3세기 중엽까지의 일부 주요 의학적 사유를 검토하여 스토아 철학과 고대 그리스 의학적 사유 간의 상관관계를 추적한다. 스토아 철학이 형성되는 시기의 의학적 저작들인 『히포크라테스 전집』의 일부 저작과 주요 의학자인 프락사고라스(Praxagoras) 및 에라시스트라토스(Erasistratos)의 문헌들에서는 이후 스토아학파의 이론을 체계적으로 정립한 크뤼시포스의 ‘프네우마’ 개념에서 중심적인 역할을 하는 ‘프네우마’의 감각 전달 및 운동 전달 기능, 그리고 심장에 있는 영혼의 지휘부(hēgemonikon)와 관련한 논의들이 발견된다. 『히포크라테스 전집』의 저작들에서는 유기체 유지의 핵심적 역할을 담당하는 ‘프네우마’ 개념이, 프락사고라스에서는 심주론(the cardiocentric theory)의 체계와 ‘프네우마’의 운동 전달에 대한 기초적인 발상이, 에라시스트라토스에서는 신경망을 통한 ‘프네우마’의 감각 및 운동 전달에 대한 구체적인 사유가 확인된다. 이러한 사유들은 스토아 철학의 ‘프네우마’ 개념의 핵심적 내용이며, 이로부터 스토아 자연학의 ‘프네우마’ 개념에 의학적 기원이 있으며, 이 시기의 의학적 사유가 스토아 특유의 유기체적 성격의 유물론 형성에 구체적인 영향을 미쳤음이 확인된다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the correlation between Stoic philosophy and ancient Greek medical thought through an analysis of major medical writings from the late fifth to mid-third centuries BCE, a period that is chronologically close to the time before the early Stoics. The analysis focuses on the key concept of pneuma, which is intimately related to Stoic corporealism. Medical writings produced during the formation of Stoic philosophy, including several works of Hippocrates and the writings of leading physicians Praxagoras and Erasistratos, discuss the functions of the pneuma in the transmission of sensation and movement. This is a pivotal concept in Chrysippus's pneuma theory. Furthermore, these writings also discuss the concept of the hegemonikon, which is located in the heart. In some of Hippocrates's writings, the concept of the pneuma is articulated as a vital force for keeping an organism alive. In Praxagoras's physiology, the framework of cardiocentric theory and basic ideas regarding the transmission of the movement of pneuma are articulated. In Erasistratos' work, specific ideas about the sensory and motor transmissions of the pneuma through neural networks are discussed. These ideas are pivotal to the concept of pneuma in Stoic philosophy. It is evident that the concept of pneuma in Stoic physics has a medical origin and that medical thought in this period exerted a particular influence on the formation of Stoic corporealism.
