미동북부 지역 대학교의 교양 음악교과 운영현황 분석 -예일 대학교, 존스 홉킨스 대학교, 컬럼비아 대학교, 바너드 대학교를 중심으로-

국문 초록

본 연구는 미동북부 지역에 위치한 대학교의 교양 음악교과 운영현황을 분석하고 국내 교양 음악교육에의 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 예일, 존스 홉킨스, 컬럼비아, 컬럼비아 부속 바너드 대학교를 연구대상으로 하여 공식 홈페이지에 게시된 교양 교육과정 및 교양 음악과목을 조사, 분석하였다. 네 대학의 2023-2024 봄학기에 개설된 교양과목은 총 106과목으로 나타났다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 교양과목은 전공 음악교육의 규모나 교육내용과 관련 없이 실기강의보다 이론강의에 집중되어 있었다. 둘째, 교양 음악과목의 유형은 모두 영역배분과목이었다. 컬럼비아 대학은 중핵과 영역배분과목을 모두 두었다. 또한 일부 학생들의 음악 배경지식 수준을 고려한 심화과목이 개설되었다. 셋째, 교양 음악과목의 영역명은 ‘인문학’, ‘인문학과 예술’이었다. 넷째, 과목의 분류는 음악단독과목(이론 76.93%, 실기 24.53%)과 융합과목(이론 5.66%, 실기 1.89%)으로 나뉜다. 다섯째, 과목의 내용은 이론일 경우 서양음악학의 다양한 분야를 다루며, 실기일 경우 작곡, 무대공연 등 실제적 음악체험을 제공한다. 구체적으로 특정 시기, 작곡가의 클래식 음악, 재즈나 대중음악 등의 실용음악, 다양한 종족음악을 포함한다. 한편 융합과목은 대중문화학, 연극, 문학과 연계된 소수 과목이 있었다. 이를 통해 국내 대학의 교양교육 인프라에 대한 보완책 마련, 중핵과 배분이수과목 증대, 음악 또는 인문학과 관련된 구체적 영역명 지정, 다양한 주제와 난이도를 반영한 과목 개발 등을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the operation status of liberal arts music education courses at universities in the Northeastern United States and draw implications for South Korea. The study investigated the liberal arts curricula and music courses listed on the official websites of Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and Barnard College. Across all universities, a total of 106 liberal arts courses were offered from the spring of 2023 to the spring of 2024. The research findings are as follows: First, liberal arts music education courses focused more on theoretical lectures rather than practical lessons, regardless of the scale or educational content of music majors. Second, all types of liberal arts music courses were distribution requirements. Columbia University had both core and distribution requirement courses. Additionally, advanced courses were offered based on students’ musical background knowledge. Third, the category names of liberal arts music courses were related to ‘Humanities’ or ‘Humanities & Arts’. Fourth, the courses were classified into music courses (theory 76.93%, performance 24.53%) and convergence courses (theory 5.66%, performance 1.89%). Fifth, the content of the courses, if theoretical, covered various fields of musicology, while practical courses provided actual musical experiences such as composition and stage performance. They included classical music, jazz, popular music, and ethnic music from certain period. Integrated courses included subjects related to popular culture studies, theater, and literature. Based on these findings, the study suggests improving the liberal arts music education infrastructure of domestic universities, expanding core or distribution requirements, designating specific categories related to music or humanities, and developing courses of various topics and difficulties.
