국문 초록

格物, 致知, 誠意, 正心, 修身, 齊家, 治國, 平天下라는 「大學」의 8조목에서 격물치지와 성의정심은 각각 「大學」의 지식교육과 도덕교육을 대표하는 개념이라고 말할 수 있다. 「大學」의 본문에서는 이들의 관련방식을 ‘而后’라는 용어를 사용하여 규정하고 있으며, 이 점에서 격물치지와 성의정심은 시간상 선후관계에 놓인, 횡적 관련을 맺는 것으로 해석될 가능성이 있다. 그러나 격물치지를 사물을 접하여 거기에 내재된 理를 자기 마음의 性으로 받아들이는 일로, 성의정심을 격물치지를 통하여 ‘획득’된 마음을 도덕적 사태에서 ‘표현’하는 일로 규정할 때, 양자는 형이상학적 마음의 획득과 표현이라는 논리적 관련 하에서 파악될 수 있으며 이 때 이 둘은 횡적 관련과 대비되는 종적 관련을 맺고 있는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 이것은 성리학에서 말하는 마음의 획득과 표현을 ‘중층구조의 사고방식’에 근거하여 해석하는 일이며, 이 때 「大學」에서 말하는 지식교육과 도덕교육은 별도의 시공간에서 이루어지는 일이 아닌 도덕성의 원천으로서의 형이상학적 마음의 획득과 표현이라는 교육의 두 측면으로서 지위를 가진다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reinterpret the relation between intellectual education and moral education in The Great Learning(「大學」). The intellectual education is represented as ‘the investigation of things and the extension of knowledge(ko-wu chih-chih, 格物致知)’ and moral education as ‘sincerity and rectification of mind(ch eng ui cheng hsin, 誠意正心)’ in the Eight Categories(八條目). According to The Great Learning, ko-wu chih-chih and ch eng ui cheng hsin are connected with the term ‘after(而后)’ so that they are conceived as following a temporal order and are empirically related. But a more careful analysis shows another possibility of interpreting their relation. In this interpretation, ko-wu chih-chih means the acquisition the metaphysical aspect of human mind(nature, 性) by discovering li(理) in things and ch eng ui cheng hsin means the expression of the mind that has been cultivated by ko-wu chih-chih. This reinterpretation is based on ‘the two-fold structure of mind’ consisting of two layers of world and mind, metaphysical and empirical. In this way, ko-wu chih-chih and ch eng ui cheng hsin can be conceived as following a logical order and intellectual education and moral education as represented by them do not constitute two kinds of activities but the two aspects of a single activity in the Neo-Confucianist theory of education.
