The purpose of present study was to investigate the relationships of work stress, fatigue, and job satisfaction among nurses working with emergency room(ER). The data collection was done from 126 ER nurses who worked with 8 general hospitals in K city with more than 300 beds from August 12, 2002 for about 2 weeks In data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’ s Correlation Coefficient, and Scheffe test were used. The study results were as follows 1. The mean score of work stress was 2.67, revealing higher than a mid level of stress. The highest stress level was in the area of ‘ conflict in doctor-nurse interpersonal relations(mean =2.92) ’, the next was i n ‘night duty with mean score of 2.88. And ’role conflict in patient care management with docters(mean=2.78)’, ‘,problems of personal relations with other hospital personnel(mean=2.71)’ ‘ heavy workload (mean=2.71)’, and shortage in expert knowledge and ‘techniques(mean=2.69)’ were followed. 2, The mean score of fatigue was 2,16 with the highest level identified in the area of physical fatigue(mean=2 ,37) , followed by mental fatigue(mean=2 , 15) and neu rosensory fatigue(mean=1.97). 3. The mean score of job satisfaction was 2.75 and the highest level showed in the area of ‘professional autonomy(mean=3.21)’ followed by ‘personal relations(mean=3.14) and professional status(mean=3.03)’ The lowest level identified in the areas of pay and promotion. 4. The differences identified in the levels of job stress, fatigue, and job satisfaction by various general characteristics showed that job stress was related to health condition, fatigue was to age, marital status, position, night duty, amount of sleep, and health condition, and job satisfaction, to monthly income, position, night duty, and fatigue level. 5. The job stress level showed a positive correlation with the level of fatigue(r= 0.48, p= .0001) and a negative correlation with the job satisfaction level(r= -0.26, p=.0028), and there was a negative correlation between fatigue and job satisfaction(r =-0.31 , p =.0005). In conclusion, the higher the job stress level among emergency room nurses, the lower the job satisfaction noted. further research in developing strategy to decrease the level of job stress and frustration in the personal and organizational level will be required.
