국문 초록

본연구는남양주호평동유적을중심으로후기구석기시대밀개, 특히 작은 밀개의 제작과 사용 양상을 분석하였다. 지금까지 작은 밀개는 대체로 감쇄의 결과물이나 기존 밀개의 축소형으로 이해되었다. 그러나 본 연구의 결과, 작은 밀개는 후기 구석기시대 기후 변화에 적응하기 위해 계획적으로 제작되고 사용되었다. 호평동 유적의 작은 밀개는 다양한 돌감과 밑감을 활용하면서도 일정한 규격성과 형태적 안정성을 유지하였으며, 이는 정밀한 가죽 가공과 의복 제작을 위한 기능적 요구에 대응한 결과였다. 쓴자국 분석 또한 작은 밀개가 건조하거나 얇은 가죽의 세밀한 처리에 특화된 도구였음을 보여준다. 더불어 호평동뿐 아니라 국내외 여러 유적에서도 작은 밀개가 확인되는 사실은, 이 현상이 특정 유적의 특수성이 아니라 후기 구석기 전반의 보편적 기술 적응 양상이었음을 뒷받침한다. 나아가 이는 후기 구석기시대의 최후빙하극성기를 전후한 기후⋅환경적 제약 속에서 인류가 생존 전략을 정밀화하고 효율성을 극대화한 결과로 이해할 수 있다. 따라서 작은 밀개는 후기 구석기 사회의 도구 전문화와 의복 혁명, 그리고 인류의 환경 적응 전략을 해명하는 핵심 자료라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the production and use of endscrapers, particularly small endscrapers, from the Late Upper Paleolithic Hopyeong-dong site in Namyangju. Previous research has generally regarded small endscrapers as by-products of reduction or as miniature versions of larger endscrapers. However, the results of this study demonstrate that small endscrapers were deliberately produced and employed as part of adaptive strategies to climatic change during the Late Upper Paleolithic. The small endscrapers from Hopyeong-dong, while utilizing a variety of raw materials and blanks, maintained a consistent degree of standardization and morphological stability, reflecting functional requirements for precise hide processing and clothing manufacture. Use-wear analysis further indicates that these tools were specialized for the fine treatment of dry or thin hides. Moreover, the occurrence of small endscrapers at both domestic and international sites suggests that this was not a localized peculiarity but rather a widespread adaptive technological trend throughout the Late Upper Paleolithic. These findings imply that small endscrapers embody a refinement of human survival strategies and an intensification of efficiency in response to the environmental constraints of the Last Glacial Maximum and its aftermath. Accordingly, small endscrapers represent crucial evidence for understanding tool specialization, the so-called “clothing revolution,” and human adaptive strategies in the Late Upper Paleolithic.
