국문 초록

이 글은 애니메이션 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스(K-Pop Demon Hunters)>(이하, <케데헌> 약칭)가 어떤 방식으로 ‘영웅의 여정’을 보여주는지 살펴본 연구이다. ‘영웅의 여정’은 전 세계의 신화와 전설 속 이야기를 정리해 만든 이야기 구조로, 크리스토퍼 보글러는 이를 12단계로 간단히 정리하여 영화나드라마에 자주 활용되고 있다. 〈케이팝 데몬 헌터스>의 주인공 ‘루미’는 K-팝 아이돌이자 악마 사냥꾼이지만, 동시에 악마의 피를 지닌 불안한 정체성을 가진 인물이다. 그녀는 동료와 함께 싸우면서 자신이 누구인지 받아들이고, 결국에는 팬들과 세상을 지키는 진정한 영웅으로 성장한다. 작품의 전개를 살펴보면 보글러가 말한 12 단계가 대부분 잘 드러나지만, ‘귀환의 길’과 ‘부활’ 같은 단계는 생략되거나단순화되어 있다. 이는 어린 관객들도 이해하기 쉽게 갈등을 줄이고, 대신 음악·춤·액션 같은 볼거리로 흥미를 높이려는 전략이라고 볼 수 있다. 결국, 이 작품의 영웅 서사는 ‘정체성의 수용과 성장’이라는 주제를 중심으로 완성되며, 한국적 문화 요소인 K-팝, 전통 설화, 음식과 의상 등과 결합해한류 애니메이션의 새로운 가능성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study examines how the animated film embodies the structure of the “Hero’s Journey.” The Hero’s Journey, originally conceptualized by Joseph Campbell and later simplified into twelve stages by Christopher Vogler, has been widely applied in films and dramas as a universal narrative framework. In the film, the protagonist Lume is portrayed as both a K-Pop idol and a demon hunter, while also struggling with the insecurity of her demonic heritage. Through conflicts and cooperation with her teammates, she learns to embrace her identity and ultimately grows into a true hero who protects her fans and the world. The narrative of the film closely follows Vogler’s twelve stages, yet the stages of “The Road Back” and “Resurrection” are simplified or omitted. This strategy reduces narrative complexity for younger audiences while highlighting the film’s strengths in music, dance, action, and visual spectacle. Ultimately, illustrates a hero’s journey centered on identity, acceptance, and growth. By weaving together elements of K-Pop, traditional Korean folklore, food, and fashion, the film demonstrates the new possibilities of Korean cultural content within global animation.
