류성룡의 교육적 배경과 자기주도적 평생학습

국문 초록

서애 류성룡은 무슨 공부를 어떻게 했기에 영의정으로서 임진왜란을 극복하여 국민과 국가를 살린 리더십 역량을 배양하였을까? 이 궁금증을 풀기 위해류성룡이 관직에 나가기 전에 집에서 받은 가학, 서울 동학과 간성 향교, 도산서원, 성균관 등에서 교육을 받은 페다고지(pedagogy), 17세에 압록강변에서주은 양명집을 읽고 19세에 관악산 암자에 들어가서 맹자를 읽은 독학, 그리고 관직에 나가서 자기주도적으로 학습을 하면서 관리들을 교육한 안드라고지(andragogy)를 살펴보았다. 독학은 자기주도적 학습인 안드라고지 범주 안에 넣었다. 문신이면서도 최전선에서 전투를 지휘하는 장수들에게 전쟁전략을 지휘할 수 있을 만큼 병법을 독학하여 문무 역량을 겸비한 것도 특이하다. 류성룡이 실용주의적인 정책을 입안하고 실천하여 나라를 구한 것은 당시주자학이 대세인 환경에서 주자학을 비판한 실용주의적인 양명학을 읽은 것과무관하지 않음을 발견하였다. 류성룡이 폭넓은 독서를 통해 균형감각을 가졌기때문에 화이부동(和而不同)과 윤집궐중(允執厥中)을 실천할 수 있었다는 것을발견하였다. 류성룡의 학이사위주(學以思爲主) 학습방법은 생각하는 것을 주로하는 독특한 방법이다. 책을 읽을 적에 경전의 원문을 읽고 스스로 그 의미를파악하는 것이 먼저이지 주해를 미리 보지 않았다. 글을 읽고 생각하는 류성룡의 학습방법은 매우 창의적인 학습방법으로 현대교육이 주목하고 활용해야 할시사점이다. 디지털시대에 모바일 화면만 들여다보고 있을 것이 아니라 세상을읽을 수 있는 시를 공부하는 것도 추천한다.

영문 초록

What did Seo-ae Ryu Sung-ryong study and how did he overcome the Imjin War(1592∼1598)? How did he cultivate the leadership capacity that saved the people and the nation as of the top government official next to the King? This article inquires into his pedagogy as well as andragogy. The institutions of his pedagogy include home Schooling (primary education at home), Seoul Donghak and Ganseong Hyanggyo (public secondary schools), Dosan Seodang (private boarding school), and Sungkyunkwan (national university) before he entered into public service. This article also heeds Ryu’s self-education. He perused Wang Yangmings Literary Collections’ which he obtained by the Abrok (Yalu) riverside at the age of 17, and the Mencius at the age of 19. His self-education can be placed in the category of self-guided learning: the method of of andragogy. This article sheds light on his andragogy as Ryu not only trained officials but also trained himself. That Ryu studied war strategies all by himself as a scholar of humanities to the level of commanding the frontline troops at the war is extraordinary. Ryu’s patriotic endeavors to save the country and his policies seem to have been inspired by Wang Yangmings literary collections’, which was criticized and banned by the mainstream scholars. It will be shown that Ryus sense of balance and extensive reading enabled him to practice the doctrines of “being harmonious but not uniform” (和而不同) and “sincerely holding fast to the mean”(允執厥中) Ryu Seong-ryong’s learning method shows his unique mode of thinking. Ryu was able to read the texts of the classics and interpret their meanings in his own way. He had a highly creative way of learning which might be of interest to modern scholars of education.
