국문 초록

이 글의 주제 ‘서애정신’은 西厓라는 인물의 ‘정신’을 추구해서 이론적으로정립해 보려는데 주된 목적이 있다. 그리고 그 정신을 가능한 후대의 정신적모형으로 상징화해보려는 데 부수적 목적이 있다. 이 글에서 ‘서애정신’은 3가지로 구성된다. 하나는 징비(懲毖)이고, 하나는 진정(眞情)이고, 또 하나는 자강(自强)이다. 징비의 첫째 의미는 자기비판, 자기책임으로서의 자기주체화이고, 또 다른 의미는 시관(time-perspective)으로서의 미래지향성이다. 그런 의미에서 징비는 ‘서애정신’의 라벨(label)이다. 둘째로 진정은 이념·가치와 분리되어 공사(公事, public affairs)를 처리한다는 것과 정파와 당파를 초월해서 자기 입장(position)과 자기 지위(status)를 갖는다는 의미를 갖는다. 그런 의미에서 진정은 중용이고 균형이고 그리고 협치의 기본이 된다. 셋째로 ‘서애정신’은 자강이다. 자강은 부국강병을 지향해서자립(自立)이며 독립(獨立)을 지키고 유지한다는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 임금에게 충성하는 것이 아니라 국가에 충성해야 하는 것, 다시 말해 서약(誓約, oath)에 의한 충성(royalty)이 아니라 계약(契約, contract)에 의한 충성(loyalty)이어야 한다는 것이다. 이와 함께 보론(subsidiary)으로 화랑정신과 충무공정신, 그리고 로마정신을함께 설명했다. 그리고 이 정신들이 각기 서애정신과 어떤 유사성을 지니는지, 그리고 그 정신들이 그 시대에 어떤 의미를 가졌는지 설명함으로써 서애정신을 오늘날 사람들은 말할 것도 없고, 다음 세대 사람들에게 정신적, 도덕적 귀감이며 지주가 될 수 있도록 하려 한다.

영문 초록

The primary purpose of this article is to pursue the spirit of the historical figure Seo-ae Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607) and establish his thought as a political theory. The secondary purpose is to symbolize his spirit into an ideal-type for our times. In this article, the Seo-ae spirit consists of three things: jingbi 懲毖 (lit. to look into the past mistakes in order to guard against later calamities), jinjeong 眞情 (lit. true conditions), and jagang 自强, self-strengthening. First of all, jingbi primarily means self-criticism, self-responsibility, and self-subjectivity, and also means the future-orientedness in terms of time perspective. In this sense, jingbi is the hallmark of the Seo-ae spirit. Secondly, jinjeong, literally translated as true conditions, implies that one ought to manage public affairs beyond his/her personal ideas or values as well as to maintain one’s position and status by overcoming his/her factional interests. In this light, jinjeong means the doctrine of the mean, balance, and the basis of governance. Thirdly, the Seo-ae spirit is self-strengthening. Self-strengthening is to stand alone, to maintain independence by making the state wealthy and the military strong. For such purposes, the ministers ought not to be loyal to the king but to the state; in other words, it implies allegiance not by oath but by contract. On a subsidiary note, this article also discusses the Hwarang spirit, the Chungmugong spirit, and the Roman spirit. By shedding light on the Seo-ae spirit in comparive perspective, this article aims to find in the Seo-ae spirit the moral paragon as well as the spiritual pillar not only for us living in the present times but also for later generations.
