국문 초록

이 연구는 유연 리더십 이론으로 류성룡의 리더십을 설명하고자 하였다. 유연 리더십 이론은 류성룡의 리더십을 특징 지우기 위하여 이 글에서 처음으로만들어진 새로운 리더십 이론이다. 이 글은 바람직한 리더십 이론은 일 처리와사람 관계의 어느 한 쪽으로 치우쳐서는 안되고, 양자 간에 균형을 이뤄야 하며, 또한 일 처리도 유연하게 하고, 사람 관리도 유연하게 해야 한다고 보았다. 사람관계와 일 처리에서의 유연을 4가지 하위 유연의 범주를 도출하였다. 대인관계에서의 유연, 사리사욕에서 초연, 신념과 제도로부터의 유연, 전략 전술의유연의 4가지 범주로 나누어, 각 범주에서 류성룡의 유연의 리더십이 어떻게구현되었는지를 사료를 통하여 탐색하였다. 네가지 범주에서 류성룡의 리더십 유형이 유연 리더십임을 일관되게 증명되고 확인되었다고 결론을 내릴 수 있다. 그는 확실히 유연의 리더십을 일관되게 구사한 사람이며, 일 처리와 사람관계에서 높은 수준의, 온전한 리더십을 구가한 리더였다. 그의 일생의 행적을바탕으로 MBTI 성격 유형 검사를 실시한 결과 ISTP로 추정되어 그의 태생적성격도 유연성에 가깝다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그의 기질이 현실감각을 선호하고 실용적이었고 유연과 자발성을 선호하기 때문에 그런 방향의 학문을 선택하여 섭렵하였고, 그러한 성격을 더 강화하는 작용을 했음을 알 수 있다. 유연성에 기반한 그의 리더십으로 인해 임진왜란 7년동안 여러가지 어려운 난관들을 유연하게 처리하여 결국에는 왜군이 빈손으로 되돌아가는데 기여한 것으로평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines Ryu Seong-ryong’s leadership in terms of flexible and natural (FN) leadership theory, which is coined for the first time in order to theorize the Ryu Seong-ryong’s leadership. The FN leadership includes flexible and natural manner both in the human relationship skill as well as in the working management manner. The human relationship skill as well as working management manner are divided into four categories of flexibility/naturalness in human relations: flexibility in human relations, flexibility in personal self-interest, naturalness in personal faith, and naturalness in working manner. This study shows that Ryu Seong-ryong’s leadership style proves to be flexible and natural in a consistent manner in the four above categories. Also, his personality type is revealed as ISTP type in the MBTI test, which means that his personal character also resembles the flexible and natural manner in both human relations as well as working manner. His personal preference is related to the realistic and pragmatic ways and to the studies that reinforce such orientations of personality and leadership types. Due to the leadership style of flexibility and naturalness, Ryu Seong-ryong could play the leading role in the Imjin War for the seven years.
