국문 초록

본 연구는 실용주의 담론이 강화되고 인문학의 위기가 심화되는 대학 교육 환경 속에서 교양으로서 문학교육의 의미와 방향성을 고찰하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이에 ‘교양’, ‘문학(고전)’, ‘읽기’라는 세 개의 핵심 요소를 반영해 교양으로서의 문학교육 목적을 ‘문학이라는 매체를 통해 인간과 사회를 성찰하는 것’으로 설정했으며, D대학의 필수 교양 과목인 <명저읽기> 문학 분반의 수업 사례를 중심으로 문학교육 방법과 효용성을 살펴보았다. 수업은 문학적 의미 읽기를 기반으로 비판적, 창의적 의미 읽기로 확장되는 구조로 구성했으며, 조별 토론과 발표 활동을 통해 학습자들의 자율적 사고와 표현을 유도하였다. 그 결과 학생들은 소설 요소를 중심으로 한 문학적 의미 읽기를 바탕으로 사회, 역사적 맥락 속에서 인간과 사회를 성찰하는 능력도 함께 함양할 수 있었다. 이는 창의적인 사고의 확장과 주체적 사유를 통한 문제 해결 능력 함양이라는, 오늘날 대학이 감당해야 하는 교양의 가치와도 부합한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the significance and direction of literature education as a liberal arts subject within the current university education environment, where pragmatist discourse is on the rise and the crisis of the humanities is deepening. By focusing on the three core elements—‘liberal arts,’ ‘literature (classics),’ and ‘reading’—the study defines the purpose of literature education in the liberal arts as fostering reflection on humanity and society through literary texts. Using the case of the literature section of the compulsory liberal arts course Reading Great Books at D University, the study examines the instructional methods and educational efficacy of the course. The class was structured to expand from literary interpretation to critical and creative readings of meaning, encouraging students’ autonomous thinking and expression through group discussions and presentations. As a result, students developed the ability to critically reflect on human beings and society within historical and social contexts, grounded in literary reading focused on novel elements. This aligns with the essential values of liberal arts education today, such as fostering creative thinking and nurturing the capacity for independent problem-solving.
