A Scoping Review of Therapeutic Songwriting: Target Populations and Purposes

국문 초록

치료적 노래만들기(therapeutic songwriting, TSW)는 대상자와 치료사가 치료적 관계 속에서 가사와 음악을 함께 창작하는 협력적 과정이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 TSW의 적용 대상 집단과 중재 목적을 파악하기 위한 목적으로 총 134편의 논문을 대상으로 주제범위 문헌고찰(scoping review)을 수행하였다. Arksey와 O’Malley가 제안한 5단계 절차에 따라, 국내외 8개 데이터베이스를 체계적으로 검색하였고, 송라이팅을 주요 중재로 활용한 연구를 포함 기준으로 삼았다. 이 리뷰는 (1) TSW 연구의 일반적 특성, (2) 적용 대상 집단, (3) 중재 목적 및 효과를 중심으로 분석을 진행하였다. 그 결과, TSW는 발달단계, 정신과, 의학/신경계, 노년기, 트라우마 및 중독, 가족/돌봄자, 그 외 환경적 특성을 지닌 다양한 집단에 적용되어 왔으며, 그 목적은 정서 표현 및 조절, 자아 및 정체감 발달, 스트레스 대처 및 회복력, 사회적 관계 및 의사소통, 질병 인식 및 회복, 삶의 의미와 목적 재구성의 여섯 가지 영역으로 분류되었다. 이 중에서도 정서 표현 증진, 적응적 대처 촉진, 자기이해 증진이 가장 빈번하게 나타난 목표였다. 본 주제범위 문헌고찰 연구의 결과는 TSW의 임상적 유용성과 다양한 실천 현장에서의 적용 가능성을 제시하며, 대상자의 특성과 목표에 기반한 맞춤형 중재 설계를 위한 기초 자료를 제공한다.

영문 초록

Therapeutic songwriting (TSW) refers to the collaborative process of making lyrics and music between therapist and participant within a therapeutic relationship. This scoping review aimed to identify the target populations and intervention purposes of TSW by analyzing 134 studies. Following Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage framework, a systematic search was conducted across five international and three Korean databases. Studies were included if songwriting was the primary therapeutic intervention. The review addressed three core questions: (1) What are the general characteristics of TSW studies? (2) Which populations have been targeted? (3) What are the primary purposes and reported outcomes of these interventions? Results revealed that TSW has been applied across various groups, including developmental, psychiatric, medical, geriatric, trauma and addiction, caregiver, and other populations, with therapeutic goals categorized into six domains: emotional expression and regulation; identity and self-concept development; coping, resilience, and adaptation; social connection and communication; illness insight and recovery; and reconstruction of meaning and purpose. Among these, emotional expression, adaptive coping, and self-understanding emerged as the most common goals. These findings provide practical insights for music therapists in designing tailored, goal-oriented interventions, and highlight the clinical utility of TSW as a flexible and evidence-based intervention across diverse practice settings.
