국문 초록

본 연구는 1970년대생 1990년대 초반 학번 작가의 문학에 나타난 세대 정체성과 노스탤지어의 정치성을 분석한다. 1990년대는 일반적으로 대중문화의 확산, 소비문화의 등장, 민주화 이후 탈정치화 시대의 개막 등으로 설명되며, ‘자기계발’과 ‘개인화’를 핵심 키워드로 삼는 시대 담론이 지배적이었다. 그러나 이러한 서사 속에는 1989∼1992학번에 해당하는 1970년대생들은 ‘386세대’처럼 민주화의 주체로서 상징화되지 못하고, 후기 90년대 학번처럼 소비의 주체로 호명되지도 않은 채, 경계적 위치에 놓이게 된다. 이 세대 작가들이 공통적으로 호출하는 핵심 기억은 ‘1991년 5월’ 즉 분신정국과 한총련의 마지막 투쟁에 대한 기억이다. 이는 공식 역사에서 삭제되거나 왜곡된 청춘기의 정치적 경험을 의미화하려는 욕망의 표현이며, 이들이 이를 반복적으로 기표화하는 서사 전략의 핵심이다. 이때의 노스탤지어는 단순한 감상적 회귀가 아니라, 사후적 자기성찰과 감정의 재구성을 통해 세대 정체성을 새재정립하려는 성찰적 노스탤지어로 작동한다. 따라서 이러한 문학적 기억 행위가 공유된 감정을 기반으로 감정의 공동체를 형성하고, 기존의 집단기억과 역사 서사에 균열을 내는 ‘노스탤지어의 정치’로 기능한다고 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the generational identity and the politics of nostalgia as represented in the literature of writers born in the 1970s who entered university in the early 1990s. The 1990s in South Korea are commonly described through narratives of cultural expansion, the rise of consumerism, and the advent of a depoliticized era following democratization. Dominant discourses of the time emphasized “self-development” and “individualization,” often highlighting personal agency over collective ideology. However, such narratives marginalize the generation that entered university between 1989 and 1992. Unlike the iconic “386 generation” who are symbolically linked to democratization, or the late-90s cohorts associated with consumer identity, this group occupies a liminal and often neglected position. The central memory repeatedly evoked in their literary works is “May 1991,” referring to the wave of student self-immolations and the final mobilizations of Hanchongryun (the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils). This collective memory reflects a desire to reclaim and re-signify political experiences of youth that have been erased or distorted in official historical narratives. The nostalgia in their literature is not a sentimental return to the past but rather a form of reflective nostalgia—a retrospective self-interrogation and emotional reconstruction that enables the redefinition of generational identity. Therefore, these acts of literary remembrance constitute the formation of an emotional community grounded in shared affect, functioning as a form of “the politics of nostalgia” that challenges dominant historical discourses and reconstructs collective memory from the margins.
