In the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teaching, architectural English terminology presents a major challenge to learners due to its high degree of specialization and complex composition. This paper, grounded in the ESP framework, explores the semantic transparency of architectural English terms and the obstacles in its acquisition. Through a combination of empirical investigation and theoretical analysis, it analyses the primary barriers encountered during the learning process and proposes corresponding strategies. The findings reveal that the level of semantic transparency in architectural English terms is a key variable influencing learners’ acquisition efficiency. Terms with high semantic transparency can reduce cognitive load for learners, facilitating rapid identification and memorization. Conversely, low-transparency terms pose significant difficulties for learners. The study suggests that to enhance the effectiveness of architectural terminology instruction, it is essential to analyze the intrinsic rationale behind term formation, reinforce explanations and contextual immersion for low-transparency terms, and guide learners in establishing network connections among terms. This research provides targeted strategies for architectural English terms teaching within the ESP framework, contributing to systematic term acquisition and ultimately improving learners ’ professional communicative competence.

영문 초록

在专门用途英语(ESP)教学领域,建筑英语术语因其高度专业性与复杂构成,成为学习者前进道路上的主要难题。本文以ESP 框架为依托,围绕建筑英语术语的语义透明性及其习得障碍展开探讨,通过实证调查与理论分析相结合的方式,剖析了术语习得过程中的主要障碍,并据此提出相应的应对策略。研究发现,建筑英语术语的语义透明性层级是影响学习者习得效率的核心变量。高透明性术语,由于其构词元素与所指概念之间存在高度的对应关系,大大减轻了学习者的认知负担,有助于学习者快速完成识别与记忆过程。相反,低透明性术语,因为形式与概念之间的关联断裂,或者存在文化负载上的差异,成为学习者习得过程中的难点。若要提升建筑术语教学的实际效果,需重点解析术语构成的内在理据,强化对低透明性术语的显性讲解与语境渗透,同时,引导学习者建立术语间的网络关联。本研究为ESP 框架下的建筑英语术语教学提供了针对性策略,有助于推动术语的系统化习得,进而提升学习者的专业交际能力。
