별의의취에 대하여

국문 초록

유식학파의 주요논서인『대승장엄경론』, 『아비달마집론』, 『섭대승론』에서는 4종의취 중 하나로서 별의의취가 등장한다. 이 별의의취에 대하여서는 종래 『대승장엄경론』·『아비달마집론』의 ‘별의의취’와 『섭대승론』의 ‘별의의취’에는 차이가 있음이 지적되어 왔다. 그 차이점이란, 첫째, 별의의취의 예로 제시되는 경문이 『대승장엄경론』·『아비달마집론』과 『섭대승론』이 서로 다르다는 것이고, 둘째, 전자의 경문은 삼성설을 의도한 것으로 이해되지만 후자는 삼성을 의도한 것이지 아닌지 불분명하다는 것이었다. 이에 본고는 이들 문헌에서 등장하는 별의의취라는 개념을 각 문헌에 대한 주석을 참조해가면서 고찰하였다. 그리고 그 결론으로 이미 지적된 기존의 차이점에 다음과 같은 두 가지 점을 추가하였다. 첫째, 『대승장엄경론』·『아비달마집론』에 있어 별의는 숨겨진 의미, 밀의이지만, 『섭대승론』에 있어 별의는 언어를 초월한 의미이다. 둘째, 『대승장엄경론』·『아비달마집론』의 별의의취 경문은 삼성을 밀의로 하여 설해진 경문이지만, 『섭대승론』의 별의의취 경문은 삼성과 같이 언설을 초월한 의미를 설시하고 있는 경문이다. 또한 본고에서는 별의의취에 관하여 이와 같이 차별된 이해를 보이는 『섭대승론』이 설법관에 있어서 『능가경』과 상당한 유사점을 보임을 지적하였다. 즉 별의를 언어초월의 의미로 이해하는 『섭대승론』은 붓다의 설법을 언어적 측면과 초언어적 측면으로 나누어 인식하고 있다고 할 수 있는데, 이러한 인식은 설법을 ‘교설의 도리’와 ‘궁극의 도리’라는 두 개념을 통하여 설명하는 『능가경』에서도 발견된다. 따라서 『섭대승론』과 『능가경』은 설법에 대한 인식에 있어 유사점을 보이고 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, Abhidharmasamuccaya, and Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the concept of arthāntarābhiprāya(別義意趣) appears. It has previously been noted that the notion of arthāntarābhiprāya in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra and Abhidharmasamuccaya are different from Mahāyānasamgraha. There are two differences. First, The scriptural passages cited as examples of arthāntarābhiprāya differ between the two groups of texts. Second, The passages in the former two works are generally understood to be based on the doctrine of the Three Natures (trisvabhāva), while the intention behind the passage in the Mahāyānasamgraha is ambiguous with regard to whether it aims to express the Three Natures. This paper examines the concept of arthāntarābhiprāya as it appears in each of these texts. And as a result, I would like to add the following two differences to the existing differences that have already been pointed out. First, In the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra and Abhidharmasamuccaya, arthāntarā(別意) means hidden intention(密意), whereas in the Mahāyānasamgraha, it means a meaning that transcends language. Second, The passages cited in the former works is written with the intention of Three Natures, whereas the passage in the Mahāyānasamgraha is sentence that speaks in meaning of transcends language like Three Natures. Furthermore, this paper points out a similarity between the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and the Laṅkāvatārasūtra in terms of their perspectives on the Buddha’s words. That is, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, by understanding arthāntarābhiprāya as a transcends language meaning, reflects a view of the Buddha’s words as comprising both linguistic and non-linguistic dimensions. This recognition is similarly found in the Laṅkāvatārasūtra, which distinguishes between the “doctrine of instruction” (deśanānaya) and the “doctrine of ultimate truth” (siddhāntanaya). Thus, both the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and the Laṅkāvatārasūtra show similarity in their understanding of the Buddha’s words.
