충무공 이순신 갑옷에 대한 문제점 비판 - 소위 이봉상 갑주와 통영충무공영당봉안 영정과의 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록

충무공 이순신의 영정과 동상은 대부분 분리형 갑주로 표현되어 있다. 그런데 이에 대해 조선 고유의 갑주는 일체형이기 때문에, 고증이 잘못되었다는 지적이 제기되어 왔다. 여기에 더해 최근에는 소위 이봉상 장군의 갑주가 이순신의 갑주로 인식됨으로써 더욱 혼란을 야기하고 있다. 본고에서는 현재 이순신의 영정·동상에서 표현된 갑주에 대해 기존에 제기되었던 문제점을 하나하나 분석해 보고, 최근 공개된 <통영충무공영당봉안>본을 비롯해서 조선중기의사료와 유물 및 전쟁기록화 등을 참고해서 임진왜란 때 이순신이 착용했던 갑주는 어떤 모습이었는지를 고찰해 보았다. 그 결과, 조선 고유의 갑주는 일체형이며 분리형은 중국식이라는 주장은 성립할 수 없음이 밝혀졌다. 즉 조선의 갑주는 분리형과 일체형의 다양한 양식이 공존했으며, 임진왜란기에는 분리형 갑주가 더 유행하고 있었으며, 이순신이 분리형갑주를 착용했다고 해서 전혀 이상할것이 없음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 원수(元帥)라는 명문을 새기고 봉황문(鳳凰紋)으로 호화롭게 장식한 소위 이봉상갑주는 이순신이 착용할 수가 없음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 노량해전 당시 이순신의 마지막 모습을 그린 <통영충무공영당봉안>본은 김은호가 그린 이순신 영정과 김세중이 조각한 동상의 모본(母本)으로서, 조선시대 이순신의 모습을 담은 유일한 영정이자, 전통시대를 통틀어 유일한 갑주본 영정이다. 이는 이순신의 용모뿐 아니라, 조선시대의 갑주와 무기 연구에서도 연구 가치를 갖고 있으므로, 앞으로 다양한 관점에서 연구를 할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Traditional Korean armor during the Joseon Dynasty was typically of an integrated (one-piece) type, yet Admiral Yi Sun-sin is often depicted wearing segmented (multi-piece) armor in portraits and statues, leading to criticisms concerning various issues of historical accuracy. Recently, further confusion has arisen as the so-called armor of General Yi Bong-sang has mistakenly been regarded as that of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. This study examined the previously raised issues concerning the armor depicted in Admiral Yi’s current portraits and statues, analyzing them one by one. In doing so, it investigated the likely form of the armor worn by the admiral during the Imjin War by consulting mid-Joseon historical records, artifacts, and paintings of wartime scenes, including the recently revealed portrait enshrined at the Tongyeong Chungmugong Memorial Hall. As a result, it was revealed that the claim asserting that Korean armor was of an integrated type while segmented armor was of Chinese origin cannot be substantiated. It was thus confirmed that various styles of armor, both segmented and integrated, coexisted during the Joseon Dynasty, and that segmented armor had become more prevalent during the Imjin War period. Therefore, there is nothing unusual about Admiral Yi Sun-sin having worn segmented armor. In addition, it was verified that the so-called ‘Yi Bong-sang armor’, which is lavishly decorated with Dragon-phoenix motifs (鳳凰紋) and inscribed with the inscription Wonsu (元帥, Marshal), could not have been worn by Admiral Yi Sun-sin. In particular, the portrait enshrined at the Tongyeong Chungmugong Memorial Hall, which depicts Admiral Yi Sun-sin in his final moments during the Battle of Noryang, served as the original model (母本) for both the portrait painted by Kim Eun-ho and the statue sculpted by Kim Se-jung. It is the only surviving portrait of Admiral Yi from the Joseon Dynasty and the only armored portrait from the entire traditional Korean period. This portrait holds research value not only in capturing Admiral Yi’s facial features but also in the study of armor and weaponry from the Joseon era. Therefore, further research from various perspectives is needed going forward.
