<숙향전>에 나타난 꿈의 구조와 시간의 중첩을 통한 자아 통합의 의미 - 전생과 현생의 ‘얽힘과 풀림’을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 <숙향전>을 적강(謫降) 모티프와 신화적 구조를 중심축으로 하여 전생과 현생, 꿈과 현실이 교차하는 서사로 보고, 그 속에서 주인공 숙향이 겪는 다섯 가지 액(厄)을 신화적 통과의례로 해석하고자 하였다. 특히 꿈의 공간에서 일어나는 기억의 회복과 자아 재구성 과정을 중심으로 자아 통합의 구조와 의미를 분석하였다. 숙향이 반복적으로 마주하는 꿈은 단순한 환상이 아니라, 전생의 ‘숨은 서사’와 현생의 ‘드러난 텍스트’를 접속시키는 핵심 장치로 작동한다. 그 속에서 시간은 선형적으로 흐르지 않고 중첩된 양상으로 전개된다. 꿈이라는 신화적 장소를 통해 숙향은 전생의 자아인 소아와 조우하고, 무의식의 층위를 순차적으로 통과하면서 자기(Self)와의 통합에 이른다. 이러한 일련의 꿈의 경험 속에서 숙향이 겪는 다섯 가지 액은 전생의 죄와 인연에 의해 설정된 운명적 시련이자 분열된 자아를 가로막던 단절의 해체와 기억의 회복을 유도하는 내면적 통과의례로 작동한다. 작품에서 설정된 다섯 가지 죽을 액은 물, 불, 죽음, 누명, 배신 등 상징적 위기를 통해 숙향의 내면을 시험하며, 이를 통과하는 과정에서 숙향은 잃었던 전생의 기억과 접속하고 이를 현재의 자아와 융합하여 더 확장된 정체성을 획득해 나간다. 특히 꿈은 전생과 현생, 무의식과 의식을 매개하며, 기억과 운명이 포개지는 중첩된 시간 구조 속에서 숙향의 존재 정체성이 재구성되는 결정적 장소로 기능하였다. 따라서 <숙향전>은 적강 모티프를 중심축으로 삼아, 여성의 고난 서사 안에서 꿈과 시간, 자아와 기억이 중층적으로 교차하는 신화적 통합 서사를 구현한다. 이러한 고전서사를 통해 인간 존재의 통합 가능성과 그 완성을 사유하게 하는 문학의 구조적 가능성을 함께 탐색할 수 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes Sukhyangjeon through the frameworks of the jeokgang motif and a mythic narrative structure, interpreting the work as a narrative in which past and present lives, dreams and reality intersect. The five crises faced by the protagonist, Sukhyang, are read as mythic rites of passage that structure her internal transformation. Focusing on the dream space where memory recovery and ego reconstruction occur, the study explores the structure and significance of ego integration. The recurring dreams that Sukhyang experiences function not as mere illusions, but as core narrative devices that link the “hidden narrative” of her previous life with the “manifest text” of her current life. Time within the dream does not proceed linearly but unfolds in layered and overlapping forms. Within this mythic space, Sukhyang encounters her past-life self—represented as the child (So-a)—and traverses successive layers of the unconscious to reach integration with the Self. These five dream-based trials, rooted in the karmic debts and relational ties of her past life, test her ego through symbolic crises involving water, fire, death, false accusation, and betrayal. By passing through each trial, Sukhyang connects with the lost memories of her past life and, by fusing them with her present self, acquires a more expanded identity. The dream functions as a decisive site that mediates between past and present, unconscious and conscious realms, enabling a reconstruction of identity within a temporality where memory and fate are folded together. Ultimately, Sukhyangjeon uses the jeokgang motif as its structural core to construct a mythic integrative narrative, where dream, time, ego, and memory interweave within a woman’s suffering. Through this classical narrative, the possibility of existential integration and the structural imagination of literature that enables its completion are both explored.
