국문 초록

본 연구는 『화랑세기』에 등장하는 치술, 선혜, 벽화의 삶을 재구함으로써 기존 사료인 『삼국사기』와 『삼국유사』에 의해 고정된 신라 여성상에 대해 비판적으로 접근하고자 하였다. 각각 정절, 불륜, 비련의 상징으로 여겨졌던 이들 인물은, 『화랑세기』의 모계 중심의 계보 속에서 보다 복합적·주체적으로 재현되며, 신라 화랑도 및 왕실 역사에서 중요한 위치를 점한다. 치술은 제상과의 혼인과 눌지왕과의 관계를 통해 화랑 계보의 시원을 형성한 인물로, ‘신모(神母)’로서의 상징성을 획득한다. 선혜는 불륜 사건 이후에도 생존하여 신궁의 제주로 활동하며 자손을 남기는 등 회복의 상징으로 재해석되며, 벽화는 권력에 의해 희생된 소녀에서 많은 이들의 사랑을 받고 자신의 혈맥을 꾸려간 행복한 여성으로 전환된다. 이처럼 『화랑세기』와 ｢화랑세계｣는 혈통의 계보와 인간관계 속에서 여성성의 상징을 새롭게 구성한다. 위서 논란에도 불구하고, 『화랑세기』가 보여주는 신라 여성의 다층적 정체성은 여성성의 상징을 비판적으로 성찰하게 하며, 여성 인물의 상징적 의미를 혁신하게 하는 중요 단서를 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study critically examines the fixed images of Silla women as portrayed in Samguksagi and Samgukyusa by reconstructing the lives of Chisul, Sunhye, and Byeokhwa as depicted in Hwarangsegi. Traditionally regarded as symbols of chastity, infidelity, and tragic femininity, these women are reinterpreted within a matrilineal genealogical framework in Hwarangsegi, which reveals their more complex and autonomous roles in the history of the Hwarang and the royal lineage. Chisul, through her marriage to Jesang and her relationship with King Nulji, becomes the foundational figure of the Hwarang genealogy and attains symbolic status as a “divine mother” (sinmo). Sunhye survives her scandal and continues to live as a ritual officiant in the royal shrine, leaving behind descendants and being reimagined as a symbol of restoration. Byeokhwa, initially depicted as a girl sacrificed to power, transforms into a beloved woman who builds her own lineage and lives a fulfilled life. In this way, Hwarangsegi and Hwarangsegye reconstruct the symbolism of femininity through the lens of genealogy and human relationships. Despite ongoing debates over its authenticity, Hwarangsegi offers critical insight into the multifaceted identities of Silla women and provides important clues for reinterpreting the symbolic meanings attached to female figures.
