국문 초록

1906년 후반기에 필사된 차상찬의 『작문일과』는 수업의 과제인 총 21편의 작문이 수록되어 대한제국기의 중학교 작문 교육을 구체적으로 보여준다. 교사가 문장으로 출제하고 답변을 작성하게 하며, 제출한 작문에 점수를 매기는 등 교수방식까지 알 수 있다. 한문 문장체가 대부분이고 다루는 주제가 “온고지신(溫故知新), 성(誠)” 등 사문(斯文)의 가치를 논하는 경우가 많아 한문 학습과 유사한 면모도 있지만, 당시에 작문과 한문은 구분된 교과였다. 『작문일과』에는 한문 단어체로 신채호와 장지연 등 당대의 계몽 논설을 연상시키는 근대 국가를 추구한 작문도 담겨 조선의 한문 학습과 달리 국문의 이념을 실천한 사례도 확인할 수 있는 것이다. 『작문일과』의 교사도 분과학문 교과서가 모두 한문인 상황에서 한문 과목과 다른 과학을 구분하라는 문제를 출제하고 근대 과학의 학습을 강조한 차상찬의 계몽적 작문에 최고점을 주었다. 서구에서 기원한 과학을 수용하기 위해서도 한문은 여전히 중요했다. 한편, 사범학교 입시에서 국한문체 작문을 실시하고 작문 수업에서 한문의 비중을 줄이기 위한 교재 최재학의 『실지응용작문법』이 출간되는 등 교육제도에서 국문의 비중을 높이기 위한 노력도 다각적으로 진행되었다.

영문 초록

Cha Sangchan’s manuscript, Daily Writing is the assignment of a middle school class, displaying writing education in Daehan Empire. In it, total 22 compositions are contained, including exam questions and evaluation grades for them. Its style is generally similar to Literary Sinitic sentences and Confucian lessons are proposed for issues of composition. However its writing class is respective curriculum from Classical Chinese and some of its composition represent enlightenment idea, aiming modern state and national language, similar to the articles of Sin Chaeho and Jang Jiyeon different from Classical Chinese writing in Joseon Dynasty. Also, the lecturer of Daily Writing presents a subject asking the difference between Classical Chinese class and other academic disciplines such as economics and politics since all textbooks are written in literary Sinitic. The lecturer of Cha Sangchan seems recognizing transitional period in that he highly evaluates Cha’s composition insisting enlightenment ideas. Literary Sinitic is still demanded for understanding sciences rooted from Western World in Daehan Empire middle school. Meanwhile, Korean-Chinese writing becomes the subject for an entrance exam of normal school instead of Literary Sinitic writing in Joseon Dynasty civil service exam and Choi Jaehak publishes Textbook for Practical Korean-Chinese Writing to achieve the enhancement of Korean national language.
