[論文] 해방기 만화책 출판문화 연구: 국내 초기 만화책 ‘아협 그림얘기책’을 중심으로

국문 초록

국내에서 만화책에 대한 사회적 인식은 군사독재 시절을 거치며 오랜 세월을 ‘불량’, ‘유치’, ‘천박’, ‘뒷골목 문화’, ‘아이들이나 보는’, ‘준범죄’ 등의 수식어를 붙일정도로 문화예술의 영역에서 배척되어왔다. 이런 인식의 원인은 사회적 요인이 있겠으나 만화의 출판문화도 한 요소이다. 한국전쟁 이후 급속히 시장이 커진 만화출판은 폭발하는 수요에 비해 생산력이 떨어져서 공장처럼 만화제작 시스템을 만들게 되었고, 급기야 만화출판의 독점화로 인해 사전검열과 함께 만화 발전의 발목을 잡는 주범이 되었다. 하지만 한국전쟁 이전인 해방기의 만화책 출판문화는 양상이 다르다. 문화예술로서 새 나라를 건설해야 하는 시대적 사명을 수행하는 역할을 한다. 을유문화사 부설 조선아동문화협회에서 발행한 ‘아협 그림얘기책’ 시리즈의 출간과정과 책들을 살펴보면 그 해답을 찾을 수 있다. 국내 최초의 만화책도 아협에서 발행했다. ‘아협 그림얘기책’ 시리즈는 빼앗겼던 한글을 되찾아 아동에게 민족의 문화와 정신을 알리는 첫 번째 과제인 한글 보급의 문제를 해결하기 위한 것과 동시에 아동들의 정서 함양을 위한 감흥도 담아내기 위해 책의 처음부터 끝까지 정성을 다해 만들었다. ‘아협 그림얘기책’ 시리즈를 통해 본 국내 초기의 만화책 출판은 이렇게 문예활동으로 나왔으며 예술적 성과까지 이룬 것이다.

영문 초록

In Korea, the social perception of comic books has been rejected in the realm of culture and art to the extent that modifiers such as “rogue,” “cultivation,” “thousand,” “cold,” “back alley culture,” “children’s viewing,” and “quasi-crime” have been added for a long time through the days of military dictatorship. The cause of this perception may be social, but the publishing culture of cartoons is also a factor. Cartoon publishing, which has rapidly grown in the market since the Korean War, has fallen in productivity compared to exploding demand, creating a cartoon production system like a factory, and eventually became the main culprit that hindered the development of cartoons along with pre-censorship due to the monopoly of cartoon publishing. However, the publishing culture of comic books during the liberation period before the Korean War is quite different. Indeed, it plays a role in fulfilling the mission of the times to build a new country as a culture and art. The answer can be found by looking at the publication process and books of the “Ahyup Picture Story Book” series published by the Chosun Children’s Culture Association, affiliated with Eulyu Cultural History. The first comic book in Korea was also published by Ahyup. The “Ahyup Picture Story Book” series was made with great care from the beginning to the end to solve the problem of distributing Hangul, the first task of recovering Hangul that had been taken and letting children know the culture and spirit of the nation. The early comic book publishing in Korea, seen through the “Ahyup Picture Story Book” series, came out as a literary activity and achieved artistic achievements.
