국문 초록

This study explores the possibility of transforming the traditional Japanese technique of kintsugi, repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, into a peace technology that addresses unresolved emotional fractures and social conflicts in Korean society. Beginning with the premise that current conflict resolution approaches tend to prioritize institutional restoration over emotional reconciliation, this paper reinterprets the aesthetics and philosophy of kintsugi and its integration into the Japanese tea ceremony (chadō) as a sensorial and ethical structure of shared affect. Drawing from interdisciplinary literature including art therapy, trauma recovery, and cultural design, the research identifies kintsugi as more than a metaphor: it functions as a visual and tactile grammar for recognizing and dignifying scars rather than erasing them. The paper analyzes how the gold-joined cracks in tea bowls serve not only as aesthetic focal points but also as devices of communal reflection and ethical engagement. Applied to the Korean context, such a structure could inspire emotional architectures that allow conflicting parties to face and integrate their experiences of loss, division, and memory rupture. The study proposes practical directions for implementing “kintsugi-informed” peace technologies across public policy, urban planning, education, and participatory art. Ultimately, it suggests that peaceful coexistence may not depend on seamless consensus but on the aesthetic and ethical capacity to share, display, and care for social wounds.
