A Comparative Analysis of Art Fairs Based on the Resource-Based Theory—A Case Study of Frieze London and Frieze Seoul Art Fairs

국문 초록

[Background] In recent years, the research on art fairs has gradually emerged as a focus of attention in the academic realm. Previous art fair research, mainly single-case or regional, lacks cross-national comparisons and strong theoretical grounding. This article endeavors to bridge this research gap by undertaking a systematic comparison of two significant art fairs, namely Frieze London and Frieze Seoul, from the perspective of the resource-based theory (RBV). [Objective] This article uses Resource-Based Theory (RBV) to compare Frieze Seoul and Frieze London. It identifies similarities and differences in their core resources and capabilities, analyzing how policy environments, cultural characteristics, and market demands influence their resource integration strategies. [Method] Based on the RBV Theory, this paper employs a comparative case study approach to analyze the allocation of both tangible and intangible resources at Frieze London and Frieze Seoul. It investigates how these resource allocations impact their market performance and sustainable development, and further explores their respective resource allocation strategies and strategic implementation in diverse market environments. [Results] A comparative study of Frieze London and Frieze Seoul reveals their distinct strengths. Frieze London maintains its global lead due to its rich art history, mature market, and extensive educational resources. Meanwhile, Frieze Seoul, bolstered by Korea's strong cultural industry, robust government support, and rising demand in emerging markets, shows strong growth and is becoming a key player in the Asian art market. [Conclusion] The study finds that proactive policy support from the Korean government (e.g., tax incentives, cultural industry development plans) fosters a favorable environment for its art market. In contrast, London needs to optimize its art market competitiveness in the wake of post-Brexit policy adjustments. Furthermore, Frieze Seoul's success demonstrates that integrating local cultural traits and market demands can effectively boost art market development.

영문 초록

【背景】近年来，艺术博览会研究逐渐成为学术界关注的热点。然而，现有研究多集中于单一案例或区域分析，缺乏跨国比较视角，且理论框架的应用相对薄弱。本文试图弥补这一研究空白，通过资源基础理论的视角，对伦敦和首尔两个重要艺术博览会进行系统比较。 【目的】本文运用资源基础理论（RBV），对首尔弗里兹艺术博览会与弗里兹伦敦艺术博览会进行了对比分析。通过梳理两个博览会的资源与能力，探讨两博览会的核心资源与能力方面的异同，探索不同政策环境、文化特质与市场需求如何影响其资源整合路径。 【方法】本文以资源基础理论为理论框架，综合运用比较研究法与案例分析法，深入探讨两个艺术博览会在有形资源与无形资源方面的配置及其对市场表现和可持续发展的影响，并进一步剖析其在不同市场环境下的资源配置策略与战略实施路径。 【结果】通过对弗里兹伦敦艺术博览会与首尔弗里兹艺术博览会的对比研究，揭示了两个博览会各自的优势和发展潜力。弗里兹伦敦凭借其深厚的艺术历史背景、成熟的市场体系和丰富的教育资源，继续保持其在全球艺术市场的领先地位。然而，首尔弗里兹凭借韩国强大的文化产业基础、政府的大力支持以及新兴市场的需求增长，展现出强劲的发展势头，并逐步成为亚洲艺术市场的重要力量。 【结论】研究发现，韩国政府的积极政策支持（如税收优惠、文化产业发展计划等）为艺术市场提供了良好的发展环境，而伦敦则需要在脱欧后的政策调整中进一步优化其艺术市场的竞争力。此外，首尔弗里兹的成功也表明，结合当地文化特色和市场需求的艺术博览会模式能够有效推动艺术市场的发展。
