국문 초록

이 연구는 여성 게이머가 매직서클을 형성하지 못하는 현상에 주목하며, 이를 규범과 함께 분석한다. 자체적인 놀이공간을 의미하는 ‘매직서클’은 차등 없는 게임 공간을 상징하기도 한다. 하지만 매직서클의 맹점은 현실과 게임이 분리되지 않는다는 점에서 드러난다. 게임에 진입하더라도 현실에서부터 이어지는 문제들은 사라지지 않기 때문이다. 이에 이 연구는 매직서클을 형성하지 못하는 대표적인 대상으로 여성 게이머를 지목하고, 그 원인을 ‘규범’에서 찾는다. 기존의 여성 게이머 연구는 이들의 게임 진입을 독려하거나 피해자성을 강조하는 방식으로 이루어졌다. 그러나 이러한 연구는 결과적으로 여성 게이머의 타자화에 관여하게 되었다. 따라서 이 연구는 현실 규범이 게임 내부에서 왜곡되는 현상을 통해 여성 게이머를 살핀다. 그리고 이들이 규범에 침투당하는 순간은 언제인지, 이것에 어떻게 대응하는지 보고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 여성 게이머들은 사회적인 통념이나 관계에 부딪힐 때 규범의 침투를 체감하였다. 이런 문제를 타파하기 위해 다양한 대응 전략도 고안됐지만, 왜곡된 규범이 재생산되면서 딜레마가 발생했다.

영문 초록

This study examines the phenomenon whereby female gamers are unable to form the magic circle, analyzing this in conjunction with norms. The concept of the “magic circle,” representing a self-contained play space, also symbolizes a gaming environment without differentiation. However, the limitations of the magic circle become apparent in its failure to separate reality from the gaming experience, as real-world issues persist even upon entering the game space. Against this backdrop, this research identifies female gamers as a representative group unable to form the magic circles and attributes the cause to ‘norms.’ Previous research on female gamers has predominantly focused on either encouraging their participation in gaming or emphasizing their victimization. Such approaches, however, have inadvertently contributed to the othering of female gamers. Consequently, this study examines female gamers through the phenomenon of real-world norms being distorted within games. It also sought to investigate when they are infiltrated by these norms and how they respond to them. The findings reveal that female gamers experience norm penetration when confronted with social stereotypes or relationships. While various coping strategies were developed to address these challenges, dilemmas arose as distorted norms are reproduced.
