Sound Symbolism and Zaum’: Transcendence through the Power of Sound

국문 초록

본고의 목표는 흘레브니코프와 크루초늬흐의 자움 시를 음성상징(sound symbolism)의 역사적 변천과 의의를 바탕으로 재평가하는 것이다. 두 시인은 언어를 자모라는 기본 소리 단위로 해체하여 새로운 세계어를 각자의 방식으로 창조하려 했다. 음성상징은 말소리가 실제 대응물과 상호 관련성을 보이는 현상을 뜻하며 고대 그리스나 인도에도 존재했던 오래된 개념이다. 18세기 러시아 시인 미하일 로모노소프도 음성상징을 기반으로 각 자모에 특정 의미를 부여했으며 이러한 연관성을 염두에 두고 시를 짓곤 했다. 그러나 19세기 프랑스 언어학자 페르디낭 드 소쉬르가 기호학을 창시하며 기표(특정 소리나 문자)와 기의(그 의미)의 자의성에 대해 역설했다. ‘기호의 자의성’이라고도 불리는 이 이론은 음성상징을 반박하며 오늘날까지도 문헌학자 대부분이 정석으로 받아들이는 개념이 되었다. 그렇다면 흘레브니코프와 크루쵸늬흐의 자움 시와 그 안의 소리 상징을 어떻게 받아들일 것인가? 이 질문이 본 논문의 핵심 질문이라 볼 수 있다. 필자는 자움 시인들의 작품을 분석하기에 앞서 음성상징에 관해 지금까지 탄생한 이론과 진행된 연구를 간략히 살펴볼 것이다. 흘레브니코프와 크루초늬흐가 어떠한 역사적 배경에서 소리로 실험했는지를 이해해야 그들 작품의 진가를 알아볼 수 있기 때문이다. 마지막으로 두 시인의 대표작들을 분석하며 그들이 어떻게 소리와 의미를 연관 지어 세계어를 창조하려 했는지 재평가해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The article aims to reevaluate the zaum’ poems of Khlebnikov and Kruchenykh based on the historical evolution and significance of sound symbolism. Both poets deconstructed language to basic sound units of consonants and vowels and tried to create a new universal language — albeit in their own ways. Sound symbolism represents the perceived connection between speech sounds and their meanings, and this concept has existed as far back as Ancient Greece and India. The eighteenth-century poet, Mikhail Lomonosov, also utilized sound symbolism to give particular meanings to certain sounds and wrote poems based on these associations. In the nineteenth century, however, the French linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, founded semiotics (or semiology) and asserted the arbitrariness between the signifier (pattern of sounds or letters) and the signified (the expressed meaning). This idea of “the arbitrariness of the sign” directly contradicted sound symbolism and has been widely accepted by philologists to this day. Given this situation, how should one interpret Khlebnikov and Kruchenykh’s zaum’ poetry and the sound symbolism within it? This question represents the focus of my article. Before diving into the poetry itself, I shall first briefly survey the theories and research on sound symbolism so far. One can truly appreciate Khlebnikov and Kruchenykh’s works only after understanding in what historical context they started experimenting with sounds. Finally, I shall analyze some of the artists’ major works to reevaluate how they attempted to create a universal language through connections between sounds and meanings.
