국문 초록

본 논문은 『<악령>에서 대립 구도를 형성하는 두 편의 고백을 고찰한다. 『<악령>에서 스테판과 스타브로긴의 고백은 내용상 각각 옳고 그름의 가치를 표방하는 것으로 해석되기 쉬우나 그러한 구도를 전적으로 적용하기에 두 편의 고백은 몇몇 석연치 않은 지점을 내포하여 심도 있는 논의를 요한다. 도스토옙스키의 작품에서 고백 서사가 사용되는 대표적인 사례를 살펴보면 『<지하로부터의 수기>나 「온순한 여자」와 같이 왜곡된 고백을 하는 서술자의 수기 혹은 독백이 두드러진다. 이들 서술자의 발화는 표면적으로는 죄에 대한 고백이지만, 그 이면에 자기 잘못에 대한 교묘한 변명을 감추고 있다. 이러한 이중적인 발화는 죄에 대한 참회는커녕 과오에 대한 정당화로 이어져 고백에 계속될수록 오히려 회개와는 멀어지는 역효과를 야기한다. 도스토옙스키가 제시하는 왜곡된 고백은 독자에게 잘못된 본보기로 기능함으로써 자기 정당화의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못하는 서술자의 과오를 답습하지 않도록 독자의 인식을 일깨운다. 『악령』에서 스타브로긴의 고백은 죄의 사함과 존재의 의미를 스스로에게서 찾는 왜곡된 고백의 전형이다. 이에 반해 스테판 트로피모비치의 고백은 일련의 비극적 사태에 대한 책임을 통감하고 뉘우치는 규범적인 고백의 전형이다. 그러나 스테판이 곧 임종을 맞음으로 인해 그의 고백은 관념적 차원에 그치고 말았다는 한계를 내포하게 된다. 도스토옙스키의 작품 속 왜곡된 고백 서사의 특징을 고려하면 독자의 인식 전환을 촉발하는 스타브로긴의 고백에서 유의미함을 도출해낼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the contrasting confessions of Stepan Trofimovich and Stavrogin in Dostoevsky's The Possessed. While one might initially interpret these confessions as embodying dichotomies - right and wrong -, they contains several ambiguous points which complicate such simplistic readings. In Dostoevsky’s oeuvre, the confessional narrative or monologue is remarkable, as illustrated in notable works such as Notes from Underground and “A Gentle Creature.” The narrators in these texts rationalize their transgressions, although superficially presenting their statement as confessions of sin. This complexity undermines the possibility of genuine repentance, as the act of confession often becomes a mechanism for self-justification rather than a path toward true contrition. Dostoevsky's portrayal of distorted confessions thus serves as a cautionary example, prompting readers to remain vigilant against the potential for self-deception inherent in their own narratives. In The Possessed, Stavrogin's confession exemplifies a distorted confessional framework, wherein he seeks forgiveness and existential meaning from within himself. In contrast, Stepan Trofimovich's normative confession acknowledges his responsibility for a series of tragic events, expressing genuine remorse. However, due to his imminent death, this confession is constrained, remaining largely abstract in its implications. Considering the features of distorted confessional narratives in Dostoevsky's works, meaningful insights can still be drawn from Stavrogin's confession, which prompts a reevaluation of the reader’s perspective on the nature of guilt and redemption within the text.
