의적 모티브 소설 『도적 니콜라 슈하이』와 『임꺽정』 비교 연구

국문 초록

본고에서는 의적을 모티브로 한 체코와 한국의 대표적인 소설 두 편을 비교, 분석한다. 20세기 초반에 저술된 이 작품들은 그 지역과 범위가 차이가 있지만 각각 배경이 되는 지역의 실제적인 사실을 바탕으로 하고 있다는 공통점이 있다. 작가들은 특정한 지역의 사회적, 경제적 상황에 대해서 잘 인식하고 있으며, 그곳의 풍속, 여러 계층의 고립성과 그들 사이의 갈등에 대해서도 잘 파악하고 있다. 이러한 사실들을 바탕으로 대중들의 소망과 연관된 전설을 모티브로 하여 신화적인 인물들을 탄생시키고 있다. 두 작품은 당시 사람들 사이에서 전해 내려오거나 사람들이 믿는 전설, 민담 등을 작품에 녹아내고 있다. 이는 ‘의적’이라는 영웅을 만드는 데 필요한 중요한 배경으로 작용한다. 『임꺽정』이 방대한 양의 전설, 민담 등을 담으며 에피소드적 서사구조를 보이지만, 『도적 니콜라 슈하이』는 조금 더 유기적인 구조를 지닌다는 차이점은 있다. 두 작품 모두 언어에 대한 측면을 보면, 아름답고 풍부한 사용이라는 점에 반론을 제기할 사람은 없을 것이다. 여러 계층의 언어뿐만 아니라 고어, 방언 등 언어는 두 작품에서 예술적 가치를 높이는 중요한 요소가 분명하다. 두 작품은 당시 사회의 현실을 매우 사실적으로 묘사하고 있고 표면적인 사실뿐만 아니라 의적이라는 모티브를 통해서 당시 사회의 당면한 문제를 드러내고 빈곤과 차별 등의 사회문제를 극복했으면 하는 ‘사회적인 목소리’로서의 역할도 하고 있다는 유사점을 지니고 있다. 물론 홍명희의 서사에서 조금 더 ‘저항의 서사’가 강조되는 면이 있지만, 두 작품은 기존 민간의 구전 문학을 받아들이는 과정에서 모두 역사적 인물에 민중의 소망을 담아 영웅적인 인물을 창조해 낸 전설을 수용하고 있다는 공통점이 있다.

영문 초록

This paper compares and analyzes two representative novels from Czech and Korean literature, both inspired by the motif of the righteous bandit. These works, written in the early 20th century, share a commonality in that they are based on the real facts of their respective regions, despite differences in their geographical scope. The authors are keenly aware of the social and economic conditions of specific regions, as well as the customs, the isolation of various social classes, and the conflicts between them. Based on these facts, they create mythical characters inspired by legends connected to the aspirations of the people. Both works incorporate legends, folktales, and beliefs passed down among the people of the time. While Im Kkeok-jeong presents a large volume of legends and folktales, showing an episodic narrative structure, The Brigand Nikola Šuhaj has a more organic structure. In terms of language, no one argue that both works are use undeniably beautiful and rich language. Not only do they incorporate the language of various social classes, but also archaic words and dialects, all of which enhance the artistic value of the works. Both works depict the realities of society at the time in a very realistic manner, revealing not only surface-level facts but also the pressing issues of the society through the motif of the righteous outlaw. They serve as a ‘social voice’, hoping to overcome social problems like poverty and discrimination. While the narrative in Hong Myung-hee's work emphasizes the theme of resistance, both works share a common feature in that they incorporate elements of historical figures and the hopes of the people to create legendary heroes, thereby embracing the folk narrative tradition.
