국문 초록

본 연구는 배우자와 자녀가 있는 중고령자가 돌봄이 필요할 때 주요 돌봄 제공자가 누구로 결정되는지를 분석하고, 자녀와의 관계적 요인(지리적 근접성, 만남 빈도, 연락 빈도)이 이에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 KLoSA 2020년(8차) 및 2022년(9차) 데이터를 활용하여 2020년에는 돌봄이 필요하지 않았으나 2022년에는 배우자, 자녀, 또는 외부로부터 돌봄을 받는다고 응답한 277명을 대상으로 다항로짓 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 자녀와의 연락 빈도가 높을수록 배우자가 돌봄 제공자로 선택될 가능성이 높았으며, 자녀와의 만남 빈도가 많을수록 배우자보다 자녀가 돌봄 제공자가 될 가능성이 증가하였다. 또한, 자녀와의 만남 빈도가 적을 경우, 자녀보다는 외부 돌봄을 받을 가능성이 유의하게 증가하였다. 한편, 지리적 근접성 역시 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 보였으나, 그 영향력은 만남 빈도나 연락 빈도보다 상대적으로 작았다. 이는 돌봄 제공자 결정 과정에서 물리적 거리보다 정서적 교류와 관계의 질이 더 중요한 요인임을 시사한다. 본 연구는 중고령자의 돌봄 제공자 결정에서 관계적 요인의 중요성을 강조하며 사회적·정책적 함의를 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores how the relationship between aging parents and their adult children shapes the selection of caregivers once aging adults begin to require assistance. Specifically, it examines the roles of geographical proximity, contact frequency, and face-to-face interaction in determining whether care is provided by a spouse, an adult child, or an external caregiver. Drawing on data from the 8th (2020) and 9th (2022) waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA), this study analyzed 277 aging adults who were independent in 2020 but began receiving assistance by 2022. The findings reveal that more frequent contact with adult children is associated with a greater likelihood that a spouse becomes the primary caregiver. In contrast, more frequent face-to-face interactions increase the probability that an adult child, rather than a spouse, assumes caregiving responsibilities. Notably, infrequent face-to-face contact substantially raises the likelihood of relying on external care providers. Although geographic proximity has a statistically notable impact on caregiving arrangements, its influence appears relatively weaker compared to that of contact frequency and face-to-face interaction. These findings underscore that emotional closeness and relational dynamics outweigh physical distance in the selection of caregivers. By highlighting the pivotal role of relationship quality, this study offers important implications for social policy and eldercare planning.
