제2차 당항포해전지의 위치 고찰

국문 초록

경남 창원시·고성군·통영시·거제시 사이 위치한 진해만은 임진왜란 시기 조선 수군이 많은 군사 활동을 펼친 지역이다. 진해만 한가운데 있는 거제시 하청면 연구리 광이도 주변의 속칭 ‘괭이바다’는 남쪽과 동쪽으로 거제시, 서쪽으로 고성군·통영시, 북쪽으로 창원시 마산합포구 진동면·진북면·진전면·구산면이 둘러싸고 있으며, 외해로 빠져나갈 수 있는 물길은 남쪽 견내량과 동쪽 구산면 앞바다밖에 없다. 임진왜란 강화교섭 시기인 1594년 조선 수군은 괭이바다의 이러한 지리적 특징을 활용하여 제2차 당항포해전을 승리로 이끌었다. 충무공 이순신의 장계에는 당시 조선 수군의 활약과 더불어 전투가 벌어지거나 주요한 군사 활동 지역이 되었던 진해 선창, 시구질포, 오리량, 어선포 등의 지명이 등장한다. 지금까지 이 전투의 배경과 경과를 다룬 연구 자료가 몇 가지 출간되었지만, 이들 지명의 위치를 학술적으로 다룬 사례는 아직 없다. 제2차 당항포해전이 벌어진 진해현과 고성현은 그 일대의 지명을 기록한 사료가 풍부하고 또한 몇몇 관련 연구 자료도 나와 있으므로 이를 통해 위 지명의 위치를 검토해볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Jinhae Bay, located between Changwon-si, Goseong-gun, Tongyeong-si, and Geoje-si in Gyeongsangnam-do, is an area where the Joseon Navy conducted many military activities during the Imjin War. The so-called ‘Gwaengi Sea’ around Gwangido Island in Yeongu-ri, Hacheong-myeon, Geoje-si, located in the middle of Jinhae Bay, is surrounded by Geoje-si to the south and east, Goseong-gun and Tongyeong-si to the west, and Jindong-myeon, Jinbuk-myeon, Jinjeon-myeon, Gusan-myon in Masan Happo-gu, Chanwon-si to the north, and the only waterways that can escape to the outer sea are Gyeonnaeryang in the south and Gusan-myeon offshore in the east. In 1594, during the intensified negotiations of the Imjin War, the Joseon Navy utilized these geographical features of Gwaengi Sea to win the 2nd Battle of Danghangpo. Chungmugong Yi Sun-shin’s drafts of war reports recorded the exploits of the Joseon Navy as well as the place names: ‘Jinhae Seonchang’, ‘Siguzilpo’, ‘Oriryang’ and ‘Eosunpo’. There has been no academic research on the location of these place names. Jinhae and Goseong counties, where the 2nd Battle of Danghangpo was fought, have an abundance of historical records mentioning these place names in the area, so we can review the locations of the above place names.
