국문 초록

독립운동을 소재로 한 한국영화는 해방기에 유행을 이루면서 활발히 만들어졌고, 1950년대 말부터 재차 활성화되기 시작하였다. 그리고 1960년대를 통과하며 다양한 작품 속에 독립운동 서사가 접목되는 사례가 늘어났다. 이러한 흐름은 1970년대로도 일부 이어졌지만, 1980년대에는 영화의 제작이 상당히 위축되었다. 그러나 1990년대를 지나 2000년대 이후에는 독립운동을 다룬 영화들이 다양하게 기획되었다. 특히 2010년대 중반부터는 ‘천만 관객’ 영화로 등극한 <암살>(2015)을 기점으로 보다 많은 독립운동의 역사가 영화 속에 담겨졌다. 그 가운데 조선어학회 사건(1942~1943)을 모티브로 한 엄유나 감독의 <말모이>(2019)가 주목되는데, 이 작품은 민족 언어에 관한 내용을 담았다는 점에서 차별성을 띠었다. <말모이>는 실제 사건과 실존 인물을 바탕에 두면서도 주인공을 비롯한 다양한 가상의 인물을 창조함으로써, 독립운동의 주체가 지식인들만이 아닌 사회 저층을 포함한 민중이었다는 사실을 시사한다. 그러나 동시에 시대상을 구현하는 과정에서 검증을 요하는 여러 가지 지점들을 노출시키는데, 특히 해당 시기 가장 파급력이 큰 대중매체 및 대중문화로 자리해 있던 영화의 역사와 조우한다는 점에서 특징을 보이기도 한다.

영문 초록

Korean films depicting the independence movement became popular during the liberation period and began to be actively produced again in the late 1950s. Additionally, through the 1960s, narratives of the independence movement were included in various films. This trend partially continued into the 1970s, but the production of such films decreased significantly in the 1980s. However, through the 1990s and after the 2000s, various films depicting the independence movement were planned and produced. In particular, starting from the mid-2010s, more of the history of the independence movement has been included in films, starting with (2015), which was a huge box office hit. Among them, (2019), produced with the motif of the Affair of Korean Language Society(1942-1943), was differentiated in that it focused on the national language. In , there are not only real events and characters, but also various fictional character types, including the main character. And through this, it is emphasized that the subjects of the independence movement were not only intellectuals but the people, including the lower classes of society. However, various points that require verification are revealed in the movie. In particular, it is characterized by the fact that it encounters the history of film, which was the most influential mass media and popular culture at that time.
