Why Has Traditional Chinese Fortune-Telling Persisted? - An Analysis of Its Pseudoscientific Nature and Transformation Pathways

국문 초록

Fortune-telling, as one of the enduring Chinese folk practices or divinatory arts, has persisted over time despite its lack of scientific foundation. Based on this contradictory social phenomenon, this paper addresses the question of why traditional Chinese fortune-telling has long endured. By examining the three core components of fortune-telling—namely, the “divinatory art,” the “consultant,” and the “practitioner”— this study investigates the pseudoscientific nature of specific techniques such as Ziwei Doushu. It reveals that such practices are fundamentally rooted in idealism and theism, disguised under a veneer of science. Through psychological and cognitive neuroscience perspectives, the study explores both positive and negative psychological motivations of consultants. It concludes that their belief in fortune-telling is largely misguided by real psychosomatic effects and indicates that their underlying need is to resolve practical issues rather than engage in divination. Accordingly, targeted pathways for transforming such practices are proposed. Ultimately, this study concludes that fortune-telling should not continue in its current form but should be actively transformed under the guidance of Marxist atheism.

영문 초록

“算命术”是存在至今的中国民间方术或数术之一，虽不科学但长期存在。本文基于该矛盾的社会现状提出“中国传统算命术何以长期存在”的问题，以完整算命行为中的三大要素“算命术”“求测者”“测算者”为切入点，通过对具体算命术紫微斗数伪科学本质的考察，发现算命术皆是以唯心主义和有神论为思想核心、披着科学外衣的伪科学。通过心理学和认知神经科学对“求测者”正负向算命心理的考察，发现他们相信算命的原因实际是真实身心效应的误导，同时表明他们的实际需求是现实问题的解决而非算命，进而基于上述考察提出针对性的算命术转化路径，最后得出关于“算命术不宜以现有形式继续存在，而应在马克思主义无神论指导下积极转化”的结论。
